William "Bill" Martin Curley, 85, of Hallettsville, Texas, passed away January 30, 2015. Bill – one of nine children – was born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 9, 1929 to the late Patrick Francis and Marie Ann Curley.
Bill graduated from Boston College High School in 1947 and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He met and married Virginia Mae Meyer on October 7, 1950 while in basic training in San Antonio, Texas.
During Bill's 20+ year career in the Air Force he was stationed in Texas, California, Washington D.C., Mississippi, Guam, Michigan and Louisiana. Bill also served a tour of duty at Nha Trang, Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
Upon retiring from the service as a Master Sergeant, Bill went to work for the Texas State Comptroller, advancing to the position of Director of Training. He next worked for the University Of Texas Division Of Extension, conducting safety and management seminars all across the state of Texas.
After conducting a seminar on management for Pizza Inn Inc., the restaurant chain was so impressed they offered him a full time position. He was ultimately promoted to Vice President in charge of Management Development and Franchising.
Bill was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a devout Catholic throughout his life, from his time as an altar boy to his frequent participation in and contribution to ACTS. Bill was part of the first men's group to bring ACTS to Hallettsville. He expressed his faith best through his many years of active service to the community.
Bill retired in 1989 and moved to Hallettsville. Retirement was a relative term, as Bill continued to actively serve the community, serving on both the Board of Directors of the Lavaca Medical Center and the Council of Alcohol and Drug Abuse in LaGrange. He was also a founding member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Bereavement Committee. Most recently, Bill was actively involved with the Lavaca Assistance Ministry Body, Inc., serving as its treasurer for 10 years and working to help those less fortunate get access to basic necessities.
