IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William W.
Crandall
June 15, 1928 – October 17, 2017
Dr. William W. Crandall left his earthly home at 1:13 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 to join his beloved son Jack Warren in Heaven. His illness was sudden, although it was probably bothering him for a while. Being a very private person and a man of few words, he would never complain when he was ill. He went to the emergency room at Lavaca Medical Center on Thursday where they determined it was a cardiac problem and immediately transferred him to DeTar Hospital. The doctors tried to insert a stent in one of the blocked arteries but found they were unable to so. They said he needed to go to Memorial Herman in Houston where most likely he would undergo bypass surgery. Upon arrival at Memorial Herman, the doctors said with his heart in such a weakened condition the bypass would be impossible for him to survive, and they tried doing the stent once again. He went into cardiac arrest and the doctors performed CPR for 30 minutes before getting a heartbeat. After that he was on life support until Tuesday. The end was peaceful under the watchful eye of his doctor and wife by his side. The doctors and nurses did everything within their power to save him, but it was not meant to be.
Dr. Crandall was born June 15, 1928. He was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War and was a radioman. He saw extensive fighting, was caught between enemy lines and even up to the day he went to Heaven, he could not eat Butterfingers. All the K-Rations had been depleted, no way to get food to them, and all that was left were Butterfingers.
After being honorably discharged from the army, he entered Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine where he graduated with honors in 1960 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Dr. Crandall did not like cold weather so he got to Texas as fast as he could. His first veterinary job was in Brenham and spent some time there before locating in Hallettsville where had a solo practice until retiring in 1992. After retiring he and his wife ran the ranch that had belonged to her parents until 2001.
Bill, as he was known, met his wife Rubie (otherwise known as Cookie) Guthrie when he went to their place at Ezzell to treat a sick cow. They were married June 5, 1966 and had one son Jack Warren, who passed away from cancer on February 7, 2016.
Bill was an outdoor person, did not like being inside very long. One of his favorite things was driving around the ranch just to see "what was going on". Bill loved to read and always had printer's ink on his fingers. Even after retiring, he read the American Veterinary Medical Association journal from cover to cover. Bill belonged to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Texas Veterinary Medical Association, and was a member of the Golden Crescent Veterinary Medical Association until his retirement. He and Jack would watch football games on TV together and discuss what was taking place. Otherwise, he was not a sports fan but loved the outdoors.
Dr. Crandall is survived by his wife, Rubie (Cookie) and was preceded in death by his son, Jack Warren, sister, Elizabeth Plaut, parents and in-laws.
