Obituary

Wilhemina "Minnie" Schraer, 99, of Hallettsville, formerly of Bellaire, Texas, died September 19, 2008. She was born on September 6, 1909 to Joseph J. & Katherina Grahmann Haas in Lavaca County, Texas.

Minnie learned how to drive a team of mules and use all the farm implements, and went to the convent school until she was 14. She worked on the family farm but also did seasonal work wrapping tomatoes in the sheds near the railroad tracks. She also worked as a seamstress for dry goods stores. She went to a beautician school in San Antonio. She then worked in beauty parlors in Hallettsville, Weimar, Cuero and other local towns. She took a year off to attend a business college and then continued the same work through WWII. Her last job in San Antonio was at the US Army base, Fort Sam Houston. She then worked seasonally in the tax assessor's office.

Minnie met her future husband, Frank J. Schraer, at Frank Woitaske's wedding dance and got to know him better at annual Texas Catholic League state conventions. They married November 10, 1947 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville. In 1956 they adopted two children, James P. Schraer and Shirley Patricia Schraer. Minnie became a full-time housewife and they settled in Bellaire.

Minnie is survived by: son James P. Schraer of Waco; daughter Shirley Patricia Kirkpatrick of Waco; 3 sisters, Annie Leopold, Magdelena Steffek, and Rosie Bludau all of Hallettsville; and 7 grandchildren, Steven Todd Martin, Shelli P. Martin, Mandy P. Kirkpatrick, Jimi Dawn Kirkpatrick, Chea A. Schraer, Patrick B. Schraer, and Janet L. Schraer.

Minnie was preceded in death by her husband Frank on September 27, 1983; parents; 3 sisters, Agnes E. Bludau, Mary Kolos, and Cecilia Ogle; and 3 brothers, Louis F. Haas, Leo Haas Sr., and Frank J. Haas.

Service: 2 pm, Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation: 2 pm, Saturday, at Kubena Funeral Home. Rosary: 1:30 pm, Sunday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Officiate: Rev. John Peters. Pallbearers: David Steffek, Lesliy Hass, Ryan Bludau, Hilbert Bludau Jr., Larry Hass, and Richard Williams. Memorials: Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
