IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Virginia Rae
King Smith
June 20, 1923 – March 16, 2017
Virginia Rae King Smith, 93, of Hallettsville, passed away March 16, 2017. She was born on June 20, 1923 to Rev. James Thomas (J.T.) & Virgie Callie McNeill King in Goliad, TX. They moved to Hallettsville in 1927, where she has lived all of her life
Virginia married Earl Claude Smith on October 20, 1945, after returning from active duty, serving 38 months in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater with an Honorable Discharge. They were married by Virginia's father, and at the time of Earl's death on November 5, 2004, they had been married for 59 years.
Virginia graduated with the class of 1941 from Hallettsville Public School, where she then became the school's librarian. She later worked for the county agent for three years. After her marriage to Earl, they moved to the Speaks Community, and there she served as election judge in the Speaks precinct. She also served as secretary/treasurer for 35 years for the Speaks Cemetery Association. She had very fond memories of working at the Bradbury Store and Post Office in Speaks for 17 years. Two of her most favorite jobs were to work as time keeper at the State Championship High School Rodeo in Hallettsville for 5 years, and to help as Room Mother for her three children, as they progressed through the Hallettsville School system. Her last contribution was to serve on the Board of Directors of the Lavaca Historical Museum. This fulfilled her love of history, especially the history of Lavaca County. She was very proud to have been a part of the new museum.
Virginia leisure time was spent reading, quilting and doing embroider work. Her father passed on the love for the Lord, serving as a Sunday School Teacher for many years, where she was still a member of Vienna Baptist Church. She was baptized in the Navidad River by her father.
