Obituary

Victor B. Steffek, 68, of Hallettsville, passed away Nov. 11, 2013. He was born on Jan. 17, 1945 to Victor L. & Mary Morisak Steffek in Hallettsville. He married Magdalen Schulte on May 15, 1965 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville. He was active in the Texas State High School Rodeo, and a member of the Knights of Columbus and Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville.

Vic can be truly described as an outdoor man. Work his cattle, baling hay, and producing pecans were the everyday jobs. But living next to the Lavaca River his entire life- hunting and fishing became a part of his existence. Drop lines in the spring were an annual river event. Catching enough fish for the Good Friday fish fry was a yearly challenge.

Hunting deer, coons, and more recently hogs, on the pecan bottoms with his friends and family was something we all looked forward to. Vic was one of the founding members of what is now the South Central Lavaca County Wildlife Management Area. The first meetings were held in the equipment shed next to their home.

Vic's deer hunting expeditions went to various locations in New Mexico, Colorado, West Texas and the Texas Panhandle. Many friends and stories were made on these various outings.

Vic had a way of giving people he cared for nicknames. A few of these are: Ronnie- "Curb" (short for Kirby the Clown who was at the Hallettsville Rodeo), Chris – "Skip"; Robbie-" Buck"; Vicki- "Sally"; Tyler-"Tooter Boy", Megan- "Rosie", Blake- "Bubbie", Bryce- "Little Bubbie", Randy Dornak- "Joe"; Billy Schulte- "Coon" ; Troy Schlinder- "T Roy" and Rick Stiewert- "Hollywood".

When the kids came to visit, Vic's first priority when the car drove up was to get the grandkids out . Abby, Tyler, Megan, Blake and Bryce all had their first four wheeler rides, first fishing trip, and play time at the "Lavaca River Beach" with their PaPa.

We all love him, we will all miss him, but will always have stories and memories to remember him.

Victor is survived by: wife Magdalen; 2 sons, Ronnie Steffek & wife Sharron of Austin, and Chris Steffek & wife Sandra of Hallettsville; daughter Vicki Brinkmeyer & husband Greg of Taylor; 2 sisters, Evelyn Dornak & husband Tommy of Hallettsville, and Anita Pesek & husband Paulie of Hallettsville; and 5 grandchildren, Abby, Megan and Tyler Steffek; and Blake and Bryce Brinkmeyer.
