IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Vernon Lewis
Miller
May 8, 1927 – February 3, 2019
Vernon Lewis Miller, 91, of Sublime, passed away Feb. 3, 2019. He was born on May 8, 1927, to John H. & Selma Meyer Miller in Sugarland. As a young boy, he could be regularly found joyfully skipping and jumping down the streets of town. His energy and joy caught the eyes of many of the old timers in town who began calling him "cricket" as a nickname, saying he reminded them of a cricket with how much he would jump and run.
The energy and joy he had as a child carried on into his adult life as well. After graduating high school, Vernon was drafted and went into the Army to serve the United States in WWII. He faithfully served for two years before being honorably discharged for his service.
When he got out of the military he attended Texas Lutheran College in Seguin and then Southwest Teachers College in San Marcos where he earned a degree in business and teaching - which gave him a great background to become an accountant. During his college years he received a new nickname - "Sugarfoot" - because he was from Sugar Land. This nickname stuck with him for life and many of his friends came to know him only as Sugarfoot.
Vernon loved watching and playing sports. He enjoyed watching football and baseball and many of his Sunday afternoons were spent watching his favorite teams. For many years Vernon played on bowling leagues, fastpitch softball, basketball, and volleyball. He excelled at sports and even won awards for being the champion in table tennis in college.
After he graduated from college, Vernon married the love of his life, Earlene Byrn. He had a great love for his family including his two children, four grandchildren, and great grandchild. They enjoyed a long life together and would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this coming May.
Vernon retired from Rhom and Haas Chemical Plant after 36 years and moved to his mother's home place in Sublime where he enjoyed gardening, deer hunting, and fishing in the pond behind the house while sipping on a cold Lone Star.
Although Vernon was small in stature, he had a faith as big as a mighty Oak tree. He loved to study God's Word and read his Bible regularly. He was a faithful man and it showed in his life and through his actions. The joy he had as a child transformed into the joy he received from God and it impacted all in his life. Vernon joyfully served and helped many people - including many years of service as the church treasurer. He never boasted and never asked for anything in return. He had a heart for loving others and telling them about his Savior.
Vernon will be greatly missed by his family and many friends, but we all rejoice knowing he is home at last with his Savior.
Vernon is survived by: his wife Earlene; son Mark Miller & wife Lisa of Weimar; daughter Donna Brock & husband Tommy of Kerrville; 4 grandchildren, Mark Miller Jr., Misti Miller, Kayla Brock and Clay Brock; and 1 great grandchild Brandon Miller.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents.
