Obituary

Vera Fernau Muehr, 101, of Sublime, went to be with her Lord on April 25, 2021.  She was born on May 1, 1919, to Christopher & Annie Dornhoefer Fernau, in Hallettsville.  She married Victor F. Muehr, on May 1, 1941, at St. Rose of Lima Parish Rectory in Schulenburg.

Vera and Victor worked together, danced together, and both served in their respective churches.  They took care of each other during illness.  She cared for their daughter and kept the home fires burning, while Vic was in the Armed Forces during WWII.

Vera was a caring daughter, mother, wife and a devout & dedicated Christian.  She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sublime, where she was baptized.  She renewed her faith in confirmation at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hallettsville.

Vera was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sublime.  She was proud when she was elected as one of the first two women to serve on church council.  She served on numerous committees and taught Sunday School.  She was instrumental in getting a Historical Marker erected for the church.  She was a valuable member of the Ladies Aid and Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.  Her love for God may have come from early childhood training, as Rev. Karl Roth, who reared her mother, was one of the founders of Zion Lutheran Church.

Vera was a person with a pleasing personality, always friendly and greeted people with sweet smile.  She could be classified as a "very good person", willing to go with the wishes of others, never argumentative, yet strong in her convictions.  She enjoyed her friends, and opened her home to groups for an afternoon of fun.

Tragedy struck her family when her brother and only sibling, PFC Flem Fernau died in Germany on May 11, 1945, during WWII, resulting from an auto accident on May 7, 1945.  The war in Europe ended on May 8, 1945.  This not only caused her grief, but left her alone to care for her parents, and several relatives.  She never refused help to anyone, and drove her parents, relatives and neighbors to church, appointments and shopping.  She was left alone again when she lost her husband on June 22, 1990, at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston.

Vera is survived by:  two loving daughters, Mary Louise Sparks of Katy, and LaVerne Chovanetz & husband Fred of Sublime; granddaughter Julie Hargrave; grandson Chris Chovanetz & wife Michele; and three great grandchildren, Lauren Wilson & husband Travis, Kayleigh Chovanetz and Kyler Chovanetz.

Vera was preceded in death by; her husband Victor, her parents, and brother PFC Flem O. Fernau.
