Velda Staggs, 99, of Hallettsville, TX, passed from the earth on January 1, 2015. She was born January 20, 1915 to William & Epsy Brooks Fahrenthold in Hallettsville. Velda was the eldest of seven children. She married Louis Monroe Staggs on December 10, 1977 at First Baptist Church in Hallettsville. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Kenedy, TX, until she moved back to Hallettsville, and now a member of Sublime Baptist Church

Velda's main joy in life was her church activities. She was a faithful worker in the Baptist Church in Kenedy. She was a Sunday School Teacher for many years, and a member of the Women's Missionary Union and the church choir.

In 2003, the Kenedy Chamber of Commerce selected Velda and husband Louis as Citizens of the Year for the many civic contributions given to the town. She was voted resident of the year at Hallettsville Rehabilitation & Nursing Center on April 25, 2013.

Velda is survived by: 2 sisters, Emily Jean Appelt and Gaye Ann Galetka of Hallettsville; step-daughter Alice Ann Copeland of McCoy, TX; and step-son Don Staggs of San Antonio, TX.

Velda was preceded in death by: Husbands M.A. Hudler and Louis Staggs; parents; 2 brothers, Max and Fred Fahrenthold; and 2 sisters, Dorothy Rother and Marjorie Schmidt.

Funeral Service: 2 pm, Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, at Sublime Baptist Church. Visitation: 4 pm., Saturday at Kubena Funeral Home. Officiant: Pastor Jeremy Krastz. Pallbearers: Jack Copeland, Murray McDonald, Mike Cannon, Mike Schmidt, Neil Schmidt, and David Mitchall. Honorary Pallbearer: Don Staggs, Bill Appelt, Kayle Herrington, Liz Nunelly, Bob Marchant, Betty Berry, Bob Edward, and Hilmer Galetka. Burial: Geiger Cemetery of Sublime. Memorials: Sublime Baptist Church Organ Fund.
