Obituary

Urvin Loy Whitehead Jr., 89, of Hallettsville, passed away Aug. 4, 2016. He was born on Sept. 3, 1926 to Urvin & Alva Taylor Whitehead Sr. in Sweetwater, TX. He was the only boy with four sisters, Lena, Faye, Margaret, and Thelma.

As a young man he served honorably in the United States Navy as a seaman, spending 15 months overseas duty; receiving the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.

After leaving the Navy, he met and fell in love with Virginia Julie Merechka. They married Dec. 25, 1947 in Corpus Christi, TX. They had two daughters, Loyce and Julie.

Urvin began working with his father building metal buildings. Then he became a machinist, a job he loved and excelled till the day he retired. After retiring he and Virginia moved to Lavaca County, Virginia's birthplace and began farming and raising cattle. They both loved the country life.

Urvin was man of many talents. He tried everything at least once with much success. He was a great man of faith, always putting God first. He was a proud husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather. He was the most caring & loving man, giving of his time and wisdom. He will always be loved and forever in our hearts and greatly missed by his family and friends.

Urvin is survived by: daughter Loyce Averett & husband Lane of Crosby, TX; sister Thelma Lusignan of Bridge City, TX; 6 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Urvin was preceded in death by: his wife Virginia; daughter Julie DeVries; parents; and 3 sisters, Faye Alford, Margaret Coldwell and Lena Smith.

Funeral Service: 11 am, Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2016, at Kubena Funeral Home. Visitation: 4 pm, Monday, at Kubena Funeral Home. Pallbearers: Joe Reynolds, Justin Folwell, Craig Sanders, Blake Sanders, Ryan DeVries, and Clint Sanders. Officiants: Rev. Elmer Hitts and Brother Spears. Memorials: Donor's Choice. Burial: Speaks Cemetery.
