OUR DAD

Our Dad, Steve Dixon, loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, canoeing, archery, and golfing. His greatest passion of the outdoors was his love for fishing with his close friends, salt or fresh, for hours on end. In his later life, one of his greatest joys was in planting his garden and watching the plants grow and produce. In his last few years, he enjoyed spending time on the back porch with our mother by his side. He became interested in bird watching and learned their songs. This past fall, we were all lounging on the porch as a family, drinking coffee and watching the birds at the feeders, when dad excitedly spotted a rare sighting of a painted bunting through his binoculars. This unique moment with our Dad will forever be with us.

Our Dad also loved the social atmosphere of country-western and square dancing. But most of all, he loved people. He would light up a room with his broad smile and charm, and always made every person feel special. Through his humor, we experienced his love of life. He saw everything through humor. When the doctor's assistant came in to say her last good-bye, she shared with tears in her eyes that he was so special, and it was an honor to have known him. He replied with a wry, "You were always such a good liar."

He modeled for us how to live life fully, to be present in every moment, and to embrace all that God gives us, even when it is uncomfortable. He once told a friend, "I believe that God has a plan for us all … and this cancer is the plan God has for me." Right to his final days, our dad stayed true to the way he lived every other day of his life. He will be forever and dearly missed.

Your Loving Sons, Veachel & DeWayne
