IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Stephen Ray
Scott
December 3, 1949 – March 28, 2021
Stephen Ray Scott, 71, of Sublime, TX, passed away on March 28, 2021.
Stephen was born on December 3, 1949 to Ford and Eunice "Tootie" Scott. He was raised in Sheridan, TX, where he attended school from kindergarten through high school and was both an all-star athlete and an accomplished student. He subsequently attended Sam Houston State University, where he studied for two years before being lured away by oil field money. He ultimately found his calling as a welder, a job he took great pride in. Lifelong friendships and many great stories were formed in the oilfield.
Stephen married Gloria, his high school sweetheart, while attending college. They settled in Sublime, TX, where they raised their three children, and they were married for almost 52 years.
Stephen was known by many nicknames. To much of his family, he was known as "Tee," the name his sister Kathy gave him when she couldn't say Stephen. To many of his friends he was known as "Steve", "Steamboat," "Papa Boat," and many other variations. He was that kind of guy.
Stephen was happiest in the outdoors and was an avid hunter and trapper. He grew up hunting in the woods around Sheridan, and the main reason he chose to go to Sam Houston State University was because it was near the National Forest where he could continue to hunt and trap. He especially loved coon hunting, raising and training blue tick hounds which were sold all over the country.
Following his retirement, Stephen enjoyed teaching his older grandsons to hunt and fish, doting on his younger grandchildren, cruising around on his Kubota with his puppy, Barney, and tending to his beloved garden, which was the source of much pride and much frustration. He also had a harmless habit of relentlessly picking on Gloria, which she will miss.
Stephen is survived by: his wife Gloria; his children, Martha "Mari" Westberry & husband Seth, Amy Vanek & husband Lance, Jason Scott & wife Krystyna; his grandchildren, Drew, Austin, Grayson, Lyla, and Lincoln; sisters, Kathy Janak & husband Kelly and Patti Mitchell & husband Larry; his brother Daniel New & wife Debbie; along with many cousins, nephews, nieces, extended family members, and friends.
Stephen was preceded in death by; his father Ford, his mother Eunice "Tootie", his brother Thomas "Dunk," and his stepfather Baker New.
The family will host a BBQ memorial at the Sheridan Lions Club Community Center in Sheridan, TX, on Saturday, April 10th @ 1:00 pm, where all who knew Stephen are invited to come eat and share memories. The funeral service will be private . Memorial contributions can be made to: Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, 2914 Swiss Avenue, Dallas, TX 75204.
