Obituary

Selma Steinberg Spies, 100, of Hallettsville, passed away Sept. 28, 2013. She was born on Dec. 6, 1912 to Peter H. & Ella Schaefer Steinberg Jr., in the Old Kinkler Community in Lavaca County, TX. For her education, she attended Boethel School. She married Hubert O. Spies on Oct. 3, 1933 at St. Peter Lutheran Church of Hallettsville. She was an active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church of Hallettsville.

Selma has been a resident at Stevens Convalescent Center since 2003. During this time, she became known as the "dog lady", because she hand sewed 1040 patch work dogs. These dogs have gone all over the state of Texas and elsewhere. Also many of her quilts have been taken near and far.

Selma is survived by: son Howard W. Spies & wife Beverly of Victoria; 2 daughters, El Rose Harding & husband Carl of Victoria, and Joyce Smithey of Buda, TX; 4 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

Selma was preceded in death by her parents and husband Hubert.

Funeral Service: 10 am, Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013 at St. Peter Lutheran Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: 5 pm, Tuesday, at Kubena Funeral Home. Officiate: Rev. Andrew Taylor. Pallbearers: Carl B. Harding III, Daniel Hubenak, Brad Hollis, Thomas Ashcraft, Carl Steinberg, and Harvey Spies. Memorials: St. Peter Lutheran Church or Old Kinkler Cemetery Association (1462 CR 240, Hallettsville, TX 77964). Burial: Old Kinkler Cemetery.
