Obituary

Ruth Roth, 95, of Hallettsville, died peacefully December 2, 2015, at DeTar Hospital, Victoria, TX, from complications of pneumonia following a long bout with Alzheimer's Disease.   She was born July 3, 1920, along with her twin sister, Ruby, in Yoakum, Texas, to Alonzo Alenson Riggs and Ella Belle Hoover Riggs. She was one of five siblings: Olive Wagener, Dorothy Swift, Walter Riggs, and Ruby Frels. All preceded her in death.

After graduating from Yoakum High School in 1938, she married Calvin Roth on September 19, 1939, at the Riggs home. They were married 64 years before his death Nov. 26, 2003. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Hallettsville through much of her life and of First Baptist Church, Yoakum, in her retirement years while living in Yoakum. During this time, she taught children's Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, sang in the Church Choir, and was active in the Women's Missionary Union.

Active in the PTA while her children were in school, she served as various officers and always as a Room Mother. Before moving back to Hallettsville in 2004, she was active in the Yoakum Garden Gate Club.

When Lavaca County EMS was organized, she and Calvin were founding members and volunteers for many years.

Ruth's greatest joy came from spending time with and making life easier for her beloved family and friends. For many years, she and her sisters entertained at local nursing homes and other gatherings with Olive playing the piano and she and Ruby playing their violins. She enjoyed taking meals to various shut ins and helping transport people to various appointments when they could not drive.

Through the years, she had a variety of work outside the home: During World War II, she worked at J.C. Penney's and later at Tex Tan. Later she and Calvin managed the Bel Air Motel, and she sat with patients at the hospital.

Ruth's father died on May 14, 1965; her mother on Oct. 26, 1965; her brother Walter Alonzo Riggs on July 16, 1944; her sisters Ruby Riggs Frels on June 27, 1976; Dorothy Opal Riggs Swift on April 4, 1977; and Olive Allyne Riggs Wagener on March 2, 2007.
