Shimek
December 27, 1931 – January 2, 2025
Roman John Shimek, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully January 2, 2025, at the age of 93. He was born on December 27, 1931, in St. John to Louis and Frances (Kutac) Shimek. He graduated from Schulenburg High School in 1949. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving our country from 1953-1955. After his service in the Army, he received a certification of accounting from the Baldwin Business School in Yoakum, TX.
Roman married Gertrude Golsch on June 28, 1955 and together they shared 69 ½ years of marriage. He and Gertie resided in Hallettsville, TX, where they raised their five children. He began his employment at Peoples State Bank in 1955 where he held many positions including Loan Officer and President before retiring in 1997. He remained an active member of the Board of Directors until his passing.
Roman was an active member of the community, serving as Lions Club President and Reporter, a member of the City Council, and a director of the Chamber of Commerce. He was also an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, serving on the Parish Board and Parish Finance Council, as well as an usher and an extraordinary eucharistic minister. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2433 and was a past Grand Knight. He was appointed a member of the Finance Board of the Diocese of Victoria by Bishop Charles Grahmann upon the board's formation. He remained an active member of the board until 2023 and received an award of appreciation from Bishop Brendan Cahill.
Roman is survived by: wife Gertrude Golsch Shimek; children, Michael Shimek, Donald (Donna) Shimek, Kenneth (Alice) Shimek, Melissa (Brent) Schindler, and Gregory (Vanessa) Shimek; grandchildren, Tamara Segura, Nathan Shimek, Brianna Thomas, Chad Shimek, Brady Shimek, Britny Nevlud, Cale Shimek, Aaron Shimek, Allison Corcoran, Adam Shimek, Lindsey Barnes, Colby Schindler, Carson Schindler, Jensen Schindler, Rylan Schindler, and Jared Shimek; and 28 great-grandchildren with 3 on the way.
Roman was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Wenceslaus, George, Milton, and Joseph Shimek; sisters, Sr. M. Agatha Shimek, Judith Horelka, Dorothy Smith, and Martha Kocich; and daughter-in-law Carolyn Shimek.
Roman will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know him through his legacy of love, patience, dedication, and will to persevere.
Funeral Mass Service: 11 am, Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville with Visitation starting at 8:30 am and Rosary starting at 10:30 am. Pallbearers: Chad Shimek, Aaron Shimek, Nathan Shimek, Carson Schindler, Rylan Schindler, and Jared Shimek. Officiant: Rev. Michael Rother. Memorials: Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Donor's Choice. Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
