IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert Otmar
Guenther
October 19, 1926 – June 15, 2006
He attended St. Rose Catholic School from Kindergarten to 8th grade and Schulenburg High School from grades 9 to 12, graduating with the class of 1945.
On June 7, 1948, he married Leona Jansky of Hallettsville at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville.
After graduating high school, he was hired by Magnolia Petroleum Company as a geophysical helper. For the next 41 years, he worked at every aspect of geophysical exploration. He held positions that ranged from a "jug hustler," laying down and picking up geophones, to the manager for land-based and marine exploration crews. For four years, he worked as a member of Mobil Oil's experimental seismic exploration crew, developing new techniques for looking for oil in difficult areas. For the last 10 years of his career with Mobil Oil, he served as the land-based manager for the company's ocean-going oil exploration vessels, the T.W. Nelson and the Mobil Search. He retired April 1, 1986, as an associate geophysicist responsible for gathering marine geophysical data in all oceans of the world. During his service overseeing the ocean-going seismic vessels, he traveled extensively, working in over 20 locales wherever oil might be found. A partial list of these sites included Norway, Indonesia, New Zealand, off continental U.S.A., Trinidad, Scotland, in the Mediterranean, United Arab Emirates, Iranian Gulf, Nigeria, Cameroon, Morocco, Libya, Egypt, England, Ireland, Germany, Netherlands, Singapore, Malaysia, Mainland China, and the Adriatic Sea (was then off shore Yugoslavia).
He acquired his formal education in geophysics while employed with Mobil Oil Company. Not only did he learn much from the many Ph.D's doing geophysical research for Mobil Oil, he also attended many of the company's special schools offered at Mobil Oil's Geophysical Research Laboratory in Dallas.
After retirement, he and Leona moved to Hallettsville in November 1986.
He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hallettsville and was a member of Hallettsville Knights of Columbus. He was also a charter member of Schulenburg Knights of Columbus Council and Artesia New Mexico Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of Hallettsville Lions Clubs.
He was a former member of Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) and a member and president of the former Lavaca Investment Club.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Leona, and his four children; Brenda LeTendre and husband Dana of Joplin, MO; Janice Cooke and husband Randy of Ringoes, NJ; Nancy Shaffer and husband Craig of Pampa, TX, and Robert A. Guenther and wife Janet of Pepperell, MA; and seven grandchildren, Danielle LeTendre, Matthew and Travis Cooke, Christopher and Katie Shaffer, and Lisa and Michael Guenther.
He is also survived by two sisters, Gertrude Eckel of Poth TX and Irene Seifert of Garwood TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Annie Guenther, and sister Anna Marie Bohmfulk.
