Obituary

Rita Mae Grahmann Kominczak, 72, of Houston, passed away unexpectedly in the late afternoon of July 26, 2023.  She was born in Hallettsville, Texas, on July 9, 1951, to the late Alois & Lucille Grahmann, as the second in their family of thirteen children.  She grew up on the family farm helping her parents with the daily tasks that come with raising a large family who grew cotton, worked livestock, and much more.  She would tell stories to her daughters, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren of how they all worked hard picking cotton, often missing school to do so, tending the garden, milking the cows, raising chickens, guineas, turkeys, and hogs, and learning to drive tractors before ever leaving elementary school.   She and her sister, Dolores, even took it upon themselves to try baking a cake on the floor to help their parents. Their family were active members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville and Rita and her siblings attended Sacred Heart Catholic School next door.  Hard work was expected of them, but they always found time in the day to pray the rosary together and practice their Catholic faith in everything that happened on the farm, play games outside together, go fishing, and visit nearby family.

Rita graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1969, and moved to Houston, Texas, shortly after.  She began taking business classes at Southwestern Business University while working as a nanny for Dr. Miller and his family.  One of her fondest memories during this time was when she accompanied the Miller family on a vacation to Gulf Shores, Alabama.  She talked for years later about how beautiful it was.  After completing business school, she began her 10-year career at Shell Oil Company in the accounting department. In Rita's later years, she worked as a paraprofessional for Aldine Independent School District and enjoyed interacting with the teachers and students.

Rita met Larry Kominczak at the Bill Mraz Dance Hall.  Larry said he asked her to dance and said to her he would not take "no" for an answer.  About a year later, they married on April 5, 1975, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  Rita and Larry bought their first home in northwest Houston and started their family.  They raised two daughters, Lisa & Amy.  They loved their daughters dearly and Rita chose to be a stay-at-home mom once Amy was born.

Rita loved spending time with her girls.  She would take them on shopping trips, to church, dance practice, Galveston Beach, Astroworld, Splashtown, Peppermint Park, the zoo or duck park, and on various Girl Scout camping or day trips.  Otherwise, she watched over her girls daily whether they were riding bicycles, swimming, playing with the neighbor's kids, climbing trees, or roller skating.

In the growing years, Lisa got married and started her family.  It wasn't a surprise that Rita loved spending her time at that point with all four of her grandchildren, Isaac, Aidan, Emily, and Clare Teague.  She traveled to see them whether they were out of the country or in the United States.  She loved going to see them at their various sporting events, dance recitals, or school functions.  She would be there cheering them on even if it was baking hot or freezing cold outside.  Her laugh, sense of humor, and presence will be greatly missed by all.

In recent years, Rita loved going to water exercise with Amy daily during the summer months in her neighborhood pool.  She also loved flower gardening in her backyard and would spend hours taking care of her plants.  She even raised milkweed for the monarch butterflies often helping them along their migration path. And, most importantly, she loved going on vacations with her family and spending time with them.

Rita is preceded in death by; her parents Alois and Lucille Grahmann, sister Dolores Holly, and brother-in-law Bobby Holly.

Rita is survived by: her husband Larry Kominczak; her two daughters, Lisa Teague & husband Justin of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Amy Kominczak of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Isaac, Aidan, Emily & Clare Teague; sisters, Laura Ruth, Joan, Sharon, Alice, Laurie; brothers, Arthur, Elroyce, Anthony, Melvin, Stanley & Alois; and countless nieces, nephews & cousins.
