Paul V. Wood Jr, 75, Chief Petty Officer, Retired US Navy, passed away April 12, 2018. He was born on March 19, 1943 to Paul V. & Elizabeth Sibertson Wood Sr. in Elgin, TX. He married Mary June Occena in the Philippines in 1975.
Paul proudly served in the Unites States Navy for 23 years, after enlisting in 1961 he was stationed on board units such as the USS Oklahoma City during Vietnam, the USS Arikara, and with the US Navy Naval Advisory Group Vietnam. During an extensive and distinguished career of establishing Naval communication stations throughout Southeast Asia to commanding Air-sea rescue boats at Naval Station Diego Garcia, Paul achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer (E-7), Radioman, and was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon and Naval Achievement medal among many other military awards.
After serving his country, traveling the world, marring Mary June, and having 3 beautiful children, Paul decided to return to the hometown where he spent many of his youthful summers with his Uncle Christian John Prilop. He has been a permeant resident of Hallettsville Texas; being a proud parent of three Sacred Heart Catholic School graduates, for over 20 years. Paul was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
Paul is survived by: his wife Mary June; 2 sons, Christian A. Wood of Austin, and Paul V. Wood III (Kristin Lee Popp) of Round Rock, TX; daughter Lizette M. Harpold (Lew Wayne Harpold III) of Houston; and 2 grandchildren Arie and Casen.
Funeral Service: 2 pm, Friday, April 20, 2018, at Kubena Funeral Home of Hallettsville with Visitation starting at 12 noon. Officiant: Msgr. John Peters. Memorials: donor's choice.
