IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Opal Elaine
Layton
June 24, 1942 – January 2, 2016
Opal Elaine Morris Layton, 73, of Corpus Christi, Texas, went to be with Our Lord and Savior on January 2nd, 2016 after a long battle with failing health. Born June 24, 1942, in Bee County, TX, to Edward and Dorothy Dobrilla Morris, she was the youngest of 6 sisters and had a younger brother. She grew up in the Beeville area and played basketball for the Beeville Lady Trojans. Opal met her love, Henry Layton, and the couple married December 16, 1961. They moved to Corpus Christi and enjoyed the next 54 years united together. Opal was a strong, loving, and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and nurse to so many.
Opal began her career as a seamstress with Haggar Slack Co. in Robstown. She moved on to become a mainstay behind the counter at Custom Auto Supply and Service in Robstown, keeping books, and working the parts ordering and inventory for her husband's business. After the family business was sold, Opal attained her nursing degree from Del Mar University and applied her skills to helping family and friends. She cared for many family members during their time of need, nursing them and making their final days as comfortable as she could. She was there for anyone in need and opened her doors to all. She was a prominent, regular aide with the local Northwest Senior Center, assisting the elderly as needed, routinely visiting with, caring for, and keeping the patrons lively and going.
Opal is survived by her husband, Henry Layton, Sr. of Corpus Christi, two sons and a daughter, Henry Jr. (Hank) and his wife, Jacqueline of Little Elm, Vonda Krauser, with husband John, of Corpus Christi, and Thomas Layton with Jaime Shumate of Corpus Christi. Opal leaves 9 grandchildren, Matthew, Taylor, Trey, Valarie, Cari, Mercedes, Vaughn, Darian and Audrianna along with 17 nieces and nephews.
Opal was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Dorothy Morris, 5 sisters, Lois Kitchen, Martha Huddler, Dorothy Clendennen, Edith Shields, Shirley Wendt, and a brother Edward David Morris. They are all reunited now in the Lord's service.
