Obituary

Oliver Lee Killough Jr., 93, of Hallettsville, passed away May 20, 2017. He was born on September 11, 1923 to Oliver L. & Beatrice Kutchka Killough Sr. in Victoria, Texas. He graduated from Yorktown High School. He married Evelyn Langhoff on September 16, 1951 at United Evangelical Lutheran Dr. Martin Luther Church in Shiner, Texas. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church of Hallettsville.

Oliver began his career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture on August 11, 1943 as a part time employee, working for the Soil conservation Service in Victoria, and then eventually being a full time employee in Beeville. In 1945, he resigned his position from the Soil Conservation Service to attend Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas. He graduated from Texas A & I University on January 1949, earning a Bachelors Degree in Agronomy. Upon graduation, he was reemployed as a Soil conservationist, working first in Victoria and then in Gonzales. On April 9, 1951, Oliver was transferred to Hallettsville as the District Conservationist, where he served 38 years, until his retirement on December 31, 1988. He was assigned to Hallettsville to officially open the field office, following the organization of the Lavaca Soil and Water Conservation District. Oliver ended his career with a total of 41 ½ years of service.

In Oliver's earlier years, he was very active in church, community and professional organizations. Oliver was an active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, where he served as the Chairman of the Congregation several times and was involved in various church organizations. He was also a past president and member of the Hallettsville Rotary Club, and Chairman of the Hallettsville Salvation Army for many years. He was a charter member of the Gulf Coast Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society, member of the Texas Soil and Water Conservation Society, and National Association of Soil and Water Conservation Society.

Oliver is survived by: his daughter Karen Novak and husband Hank of Flatonia; two granddaughters, Laura Novak Blahuta & husband Carl of Hallettsville, and Kristen Novak Jackson & husband George of Houston; and 2 great grandsons, Peyton and Brady Blahuta of Hallettsville.

Oliver was preceded in death by; his parents and his wife Evelyn Langhoff Killough.

Funeral Service: 10 am, Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at St. Peter Lutheran Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: 4 pm, Tuesday at Kubena Funeral Home with Prayer Service starting at7 pm. Officiant: Pastor Ray Hagan. Pallbearers: Darryll Langhoff, Frankie Novak, Carl Blahuta, George Jackson, Steve Blahuta and Greg Hermes. Memorials: St. Peter Lutheran Church or Donor's Choice. Burial: 1 pm, Wednesday at Shiner City Cemetery.
