Mildred Amelia Plagens Lindsey passed in peace on Tuesday, May 14, 2013. In her 91 years on the stage of life, she played many roles—some as leading lady, some as supporting cast, but always with a style all her own.
Her first role was daughter and sister, born to Augusta (Gussie) Prinzel Plagens Sabo and Otto Plagens, in Kurten, Texas on November 14, 1921. As the third of four sisters, she was known as the bookworm and the one that could usually convince the others to do the difficult chores.
As a young lady, Mildred attended Sam Houston University at Huntsville, Texas before being offered a position as Secretary with the Texas A&M Agricultural Department. This was only the beginning of what would become a lifelong mania for all things Texas A&M.
Mildred married John (Jack) Lindsey on November 27, 1941. Less than one month later, World War II was declared, and in Mildred's words, "Life changed dramatically." Jack and Mildred settled in Hallettsville, TX in 1945. There they became fixtures in the community, and raised their three children, Jerald (Jerry) Lindsey, Ronald Lindsey, and Betty Lindsey Spencer. As a mother, Mildred was known less for her cooking and cleaning skills, and more for her working-woman spirit and no nonsense attitude.
Mildred took great pride in her work outside the home, serving as Secretary for the County Clerk's office, Assistant County Auditor, Department of Human Resources Commodity Division, and Food Stamp Division. She also served as Room Mother and PTA President.
Like many long-time Hallettsville residents, Mildred remembered vividly the flood of 1981, where she held on to her porch railing, up to her neck in ant-infested floodwaters, for 2 hours before being rescued by a neighbor.
As a member of the First Baptist Church of Hallettsville, she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, oversaw children's musicals, and directed Vacation Bible School. She also became an ardent fan of Hallettsville High School Basketball, attending two state play-offs and becoming an honorary member of the team. Mildred was a member of the German Club, Lavaca County Retired Teachers Association, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, her husband, and scores of dear friends. She is survived by her sister Patricia Taylor of Houston, Texas, and her children: Lt. Col. (Ret.) Jerald Lindsey and his wife Candy of Tyler, Texas; Ronald Lindsey and his wife Kathy of Bastrop, Texas; and Betty Lindsey Spencer and her husband Mike of Hallettsville, Texas. Mildred had seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren, who were the delight of her later years.
Though the curtain has closed, Mildred's shadow is still imprinted on the stage. Her love of the Aggies, penchant for made-up words, knack for creating impossible treasure hunts, obsession with garden tomatoes, and countless other lovable quirks and characteristics live on in those that have known her well and will miss her deeply.
