Obituary

Mildred M. Franta, of Hallettsville, began her heavenly journey on March 21, 2017, at the age of 92.

Mildred was born June 12, 1924, to Jim L. and Mary Kokas Mikes in Shiner and had lived in Houston and Austin. She was an honor student, graduated from high school at age sixteen, and attended the University of Houston. She was a lab technologist, a book-keeper and an office manager holding positions at Drs. Dildy and Bain, Austin, Renger Clinic and Hospital, Hallettsville, office manager for Dr. E. Pat Wright, after semi-retiring, she worked part time at Friench Simpson Memorial Library, fully retiring at age seventy-three. She considered her most important work, mothering her family of four young children.

Mildred was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and had been a 60 year member and past trustee of the Catholic Daughters of America, member of K.J.Z.T. Society, Lavaca Historical Commission, Friends of the Library, A.M. News Coffee Group, historian and reporter for Czech Heritage Society, secretary for American Cancer Society, member and later sponsor of Preceptor Omicron Tau Sorority, serving in all positions, including president and five time winner of their Woman of the Year Award.

Mildred found great joy in attending her children's and grandchildren's baseball and football games, swimming and scouting events, flower gardening, enjoyed spending time at the seashore, but her most enjoyable hours were spent reading. She will be remembered as kind and giving, independent, generous, and as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and supportive friend.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, son Charles Franta & wife Frances of Hallettsville, son Jimmy Franta of Beeville, and daughter Janice Strauss & husband Carl of Kingwood; Grandchildren, Steven Franta & wife Amanda, Kyle Franta & wife Cassie, Lana Beth Franta, Jana Schmidt & husband Brandon, and Troy Strauss & wife Elizabeth; and Great grandchildren, Callyn, twins Canon & Cason Franta, Dixie Karsyn, Kaspyn & McLaine Franta and Sebastian Simmons. To her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she was affectionately called Oma.

Mildred was preceded in death by: her husband Joseph; son Joey Franta; parents; sister Leona Dusek; daughter-in-law Debi Kostelnik Franta; and 2 brothers, Captain Alphons Mikes (ret.) and Col. Edward Mikes (ret.).

Funeral Mass Service: 2 pm, Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: 4 pm, Monday, at Kubena Funeral Home; with Rosary starting at 7 pm. Officiant: Msgr. John Peters. Pallbearers: Steven Franta, Kyle Franta, Troy Strauss, Brandon Schmidt, Franklin Darilek, and Robert (Sam) Bordovsky. Honorary Pallbearers: Sebastian Simmons, Canon & Cason Franta. Memorials (in lieu of flowers): Friench Simpson Memorial Library, Dewitt-Lavaca Special Olympics Team, or Msgr. John Peter's Burse # 7. Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
