Obituary

Maxie Paul Brocker, 85, of Hallettsville, passed away November 14, 2020, after a long illness.  The only child of Maxie Kahn and Florine Menking Brocker, he was born September 10, 1935 in Hallettsville, TX.

After graduation from Hallettsville High School in 1951 at the age of 15, Maxie Paul went to work with his dad for Lavaca County as a road hand.  By 1954 he had gone to work for South Texas Construction Company working on roads in the Port Isabel area.  He was an exceptional motor grader operator with a keen ability to eye-ball and make grade without instruments.  On December 19, 1954 he married Lanell Walker in Yoakum and they made their home in Hallettsville.  In the early 1960s, he began working for Trinity Construction Company where he served as supervisor, general superintendent and later as project manager for more than 30 years working primarily in the Houston area.  While with Trinity, he was recognized by the Texas Department of Transportation for exemplary cooperation and performance in the construction of a portion of Loop 610 in Houston near the Astrodome.  He finished his highway construction career with Williams Brothers Construction Company in Houston as a superintendent and project manager, before coming home to Hallettsville where he was proud to serve as Lavaca County Commissioner for Precinct 1 from 1997 to 2000.

Maxie enjoyed his tractors, hunting trips to Burnet and the Moody Ranch, and was always busy doing something around the place whether it was building fence, shredding the pastures, killing mesquite or taking care of the cows.  He loved his family and always wanted what was best for them.  He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren, and recently his great grandchildren, grow and enjoy the country and tractors.

Maxie is survived by:  his wife of 65 years, Lanell Brocker; 2 daughters, Barbara Vasek & husband Alvin, and Brenda Migl & husband Jerry; grandchildren, Gary Paul Migl, Justin Wayne Vasek & wife Taditha, Vanessa Ann Smith & husband Keven; great-grandchildren, Clayton Migl, Maislee Vasek and Dayton Vasek; and brother-in-law Leonard Walker.

Maxie was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law Bennie Lou Walker.

The family wants to thank Dr. Marshall Bishop, the staff at Yoakum Community Hospital, the wonderful caregivers with Hospice of South Texas, Lavaca County EMS and Pastor Herb Beyer for their help and support these last few months.
