Mary attended Pleasant Grove School. She worked as a housekeeper in Robstown, Texas at an early age until she married William L. Zappe, on October 18, 1944, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville.
Mary was a housewife and worked on a farm along with her husband for 55 years. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, canning, baking and her two Border Collie Dogs. She enjoyed family gatherings with all her brothers and sisters. Special moments were with her grandchildren during the summer and also trips to the Rockport Beach. Her special treat was candy, ice cream and soda water.
Mary is survived by: daughter Elaine Mican & husband Gilbert; 2 grandchildren, Brian Mican & wife Emily of College Station, and Melissa Mican of Houston; 2 sisters, Alma Brosch and Agnes Holik; and 2 brothers, Lado and Willie Hlavac.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband on July 1, 1999; her parents; 3 sisters, Albina Hlavac, Vlasta Holik, and Annie Boehm; and 3 brothers, Johnnie, Raymond and Franklin Hlavac.
Service: 2 pm, Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation: 2 pm, Wednesday, at Kubena Funeral Home. Rosaries: 7 pm, Wednesday at Kubena Funeral Home; and 1:30 pm, Thursday at Sacred Heart Church. Officiate: Rev. John Peters. Pallbearers: Franklin Sedlar, Rick Roos, Harvey Hlavac, Marvin Holik, Franklin Filip, and Larry Hlavac. Honorary Pallbearers: Stanley Brosch, Ricky Bonewald, Michael Hlavac, Anthony Hlavac, and Robert Brosch. Memorials: Hospice of South Texas, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, or Donor's Choice. Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
