Mary Devall Smith, 85, was born September 29, 1937, in Hallettsville, Texas, to Mary Bagby Devall and Col. Sam S. Devall. She departed this life on Saturday, January 28, 2023, in Richmond, Texas.
Mary graduated from Hallettsville High School in 1955, and attended Texas State Teacher's College (now Texas State University) in San Marcos, graduating in 1959. After college she taught school in the North East Independent School District in San Antonio, where she met her husband Jerome Smith, who was stationed at Fort Sam Houston at the time. They were married on June 5, 1960, in Hallettsville.
After moving throughout Texas and Illinois for Jerome's job with Sears, the couple settled in Hallettsville with their four children in 1975. Mary later taught in the Shiner Independent School District and supported the family business, 90-A Drive-In and Grocery. Mary was a loving daughter, mother and grandmother and was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church.
Mary is survived by: her four children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; son Todd Smith of Austin, TX & children Reagan and Jacob; daughter Mary Clark (Keivan) of New Braunfels, TX & children Taylor and Reilly; son Sam Smith (Melissa) of Keller, TX & children Abby and Bennett; and daughter Catherine Hill (Jason) of Richmond, TX & children Mary Catherine, Benjamin, and Turner Opela. Her great-grandson Hayes is the son of Taylor & Seth Uecker. Mary is also survived by her; sisters-in-law Gladys Devall, Rhoda Brooks & Barbara Smith, brothers-in-law William Barry & James Smith, and many nieces and nephews.
Mary is preceded in death by; her husband of 58 years and love of her life, Jerry Smith, her parents Col. Sam & Mary Devall, brother Sam Devall & his wife Christine, brother William Devall, and sister Sara Devall Barry.
The family will be holding a private service to celebrate her life.
