Mary Evelyn Lickliter VanPelt, 84, of Hallettsville, Texas passed away on March 8, 2024, at DeTar Hospital in Victoria, Texas. She was born on June 11, 1939, in Baltimore, Maryland to Lewis Bryant Lickliter and Mary Susan Noone. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville.
Mary was a past employee of Weingarten Grocery in Houston and a dedicated thirty-year employee of Walmart in Hallettsville. She was one of the very first employees hired when Walmart opened in Hallettsville, Texas.
Mary is survived by: her husband James (Jimmy) VanPelt of 49 years; sister Beverly Long of Houston; sons, Jeff VanPelt of Victoria, Michael VanPelt & wife Debbie of Ganado, Doug VanPelt & wife Jan of Spring and Clay VanPelt & wife Shelly of Inez; nine grandchildren, Dillon Brown (Adeline), Jared Brown (Katie), Brian Cunningham, Dayna Wharton (Scott), Marie Valenta (Devon), Christine VanPelt, Lauren (David) Thieme, Kelsey Fuller (Brazos) and Karson VanPelt; and eight great grandchildren; Brooks Brown, Beckham Brown, Cameron Cunningham, Kendall Cunningham, Alyssa Wharton, Ian Wharton, David (Dax)Thieme and Caroline Valenta.
Mary was preceded in death by; her father Lewis, stepmother Gladys, grandson Nicholas VanPelt, daughter-in-law Peggy VanPelt, brother-in-law Ed Long and niece Beckly DeMoss.
Special thanks to Dr. Nicholas Short of MD Anderson, Dr. Fariborz Gorouhi, Dr. Michael Nash, Advanced Home Health Services, Lavaca Medical Center, and PAM Rehabilitation of Victoria, Texas for the special care given to Mary.
Funeral Mass Service: 10 am, Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville; with Visitation starting at 9 am and Rosary starting at 9:30 am. Pallbearers: Jared Brown, Brian Cunningham, Cameron Cunningham, Brazos Fuller, Karson VanPelt and Ian Wharton. Honorary Pallbearers: Mary's past and present Walmart co-workers. Officiants: Msgr. John Peters and Deacon Anthony (Red) Hensley. Memorials (in lieu of flowers): MD Anderson Cancer Center, Sacred Heart Catholic Church Maintenance Fund in Hallettsville, Texas or donor's choice. Burial: Speaks Cemetery.
