Obituary

Mary Virginia "Gin" Davis, 98, of Hallettsville, passed away August 20, 2011. She was born on January 4, 1913 to Stephen H. & Mary Neal Simpson Sr. in Columbus, Texas. They later moved with the family to Hallettsville, where her father joined the First National Bank of Hallettsville (now Wells Fargo) as Vice-President.

Gin graduation from Hallettsville High School, she attended The College of Industrial Arts in Denton (now TWU) and later the University of Texas at Austin. During WWII, she moved to San Antonio and was the Librarian for Kelly Field. On 29 Oct 1949, she married William W. Davis of Galveston. They settled in Hallettsville where Bill continued his insurance career with the Friench Simpson and Sons Insurance Agency, and later started his banking career as the assistant cashier at the First National Bank of Hallettsville. On 20 January 1951, their only child, "Bill Jr." was born. She loved golfing and traveling with the "Two Bills" and their many friends. Prior to losing her eyesight, her passion was reading cookbooks and experimenting with recipes. She was a gifted cook, and loved to entertain. Up until her death, you could count on "Happy Hour" with hors d'oeuvres at her home at a moment's notice. When not in the kitchen she was often found curled up in her chair with a needlepoint canvas or knitting needles creating beautiful treasure she shared with friends and family.

Gin served on the Board of the Friench Simpson Memorial Library (named for her Grandfather) and the 1st National Bank of Hallettsville. She has been a significant contributor to the Friench Simpson Memorial Library, the Lavaca County/Hallettsville EMS, the First United Methodist Church, St. James Episcopal Church, and the Hallettsville Cemetery.

Gin is survived by her cousin, James H. Simpson, Jr. and his wife Lois formerly of Hallettsville and now living in College Station; nephew Stephen H. Simpson III and niece Dana M Simpson, both from San Antonio, nephews Parker Davis, Dunwoody, GA, (Buddy) Davis, Hunt TX, and D.V. (Buddy) Luby, Hunt, TX. Nieces 'Lamb' Hardie and Diana LaPierre of New Orleans.

Gin was preceded in death by her son in 1992 and her husband in 1997, her parents Herbert and Mary Simpson, and her brother Stephen H Simpson, Jr.

Special thanks go to the personal attention, care, and consideration that was given to her by her friends and devoted support group Sally Kolos, Ladell Hogan, Carolyn Jenkins, and for the last few months the outstanding administration and caring staff from Helping Hearts Sitter Service and Hospice of South Texas.

Gin's love, generosity, and lifelong presence in Hallettsville will be sorely missed.
