IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Loraine Anita
Konvicka Deem
November 30, 1933 – July 2, 2021
Loraine Anita Konvicka Deem was born on November 30, 1933 to August and Rosie Barborak Konvicka. She grew up on her parent's farm in Moravia, Texas and was the second of five children. She quickly developed a love for animals and enjoyed her simple chores, some of them being slopping the hogs and scattering maize for the chickens and geese. As she got older, she was put in charge of looking after her little brother, Franklin, while her sister and parents were in the field picking cotton. When she was old enough to start school, she would walk with her sister, Linda, to the Moravia school house, only one and a half miles from their farm. She loved school and loved to learn. Not a day went by that she didn't enjoy. In the summer, she would go to Hallettsville to room with Linda and work at the Lavacan Café. She continued to work there until she met the love of her life Charlie Deem. She married "her C.J." on June 18, 1955. A few years later they had their son Perry Joseph on November 28, 1963.
One of Loraine's talents was with a pen and paper. In 1973, she became famous to those who lived in and around Hallettsville. Living in a small community, everyone wanted to be informed on the latest news. Members of the Moravia parish wanted to advertise their parish picnic as well as the community news and asked Loraine to compile an article for the Tribune Herald to publish. When the first article was published on April 30, 1973, she received many calls praising her for her write up and asking for more. "Moravia News" became a big hit and she compiled the news of families for many weeks until the column became hers under the name "Loraine's Letter." In it, she not only included news, but also made it her own, adding family recipes, inspirational thoughts, her favorite poems, and even poems she had written herself. She continued writing for many years and "retired" from her pen in 1996.
Loraine was very strong in her faith. She was dedicated to her parish, Ascension of Our Lord serving her Lord in various ways. She was the sacristan for over 40 years, sang in the church choir, was a catechist for the parish CCD program, was the parish representative for the painted churches tours, and was a member of the Moravia Alter Society. She was also a member of the Moravia Czech Singers and enjoyed traveling with the group to celebrate their heritage.
Loraine was loved by many. She was very gentle in her ways and was kind to all. In her later years, even though Loraine battled dementia, she never failed to recognize her family's faces. Perry, Roxanne, Colleen, and Caitlyn would visit whenever they could and she would light up the room with her smile when she saw them.
