Obituary

Leona H. Schmand Chromcak was born on October 11, 1908 in Houston to Leonard & Sophie Heid Schmand. They lived in Houston until 1920, when they moved to Schulenburg. She was 12 years old at the time.

Leona met George Chromcak at a dance near Schulenburg and they married April 8, 1929 at the Lutheran Church in Weimar. They had one child Doyleen Drozd. They made their home on a farm in Moravia.

George passed away on September 14, 1955. She continued to live on the farm with Doyleen and her sister-in-law Mary Chromcak. She baby sat for many neighboring children and was a member of the Lavaca County Home Demonstration Club since it started.

Leona loved to play baseball as a young woman, earning her the name "Babe Ruth". She loved to sing, dance and play the piano and organ. She also loved to read, garden, and cook for her family. She always maintained a beautiful flower garden and home. Leona especially loved her roses and enjoyed her cats. She loved a good joke and she loved her family. Some of her favorite sayings were, "still kicking but not as high" and "the old gray mare is not what she used to be".

Leona worked at Gindler's Department Store for 25 years. After her retirement she volunteered at L.A.M.B. Ministries. She baby sat her two grandchildren Calvin and Dwayne Drozd as well as her great-grandchildren, Ryan, Brittany, Shannon, Shane, Braden, and Shawn Drozd. She was a member of the Lutheran Church, Lavaca County Home Demonstration Club, Moravia Farm Bureau and SPJST.

Leona was preceded in death by her husband; 2 great-grandsons, Ryan Jerome Drozd on Nov. 25, 2001, and Shawn Harvey Drozd on Mar. 5, 2002; her parents; and ½ sister Norma Lichey.

Leona is survived by her daughter Doyleen Drozd & husband Harvey; 2 grandsons, Calvin Drozd & wife Sheila, and Dwayne Drozd & wife Marilyn; and 4 great-grandchildren, Brittany, Shannon, Shane, and Braden.
