Leon E. Smirak, 75, of Hallettsville, passed away April 20, 2017. He was born on October 13, 1941 to Joseph A. & Elenora Dornak Smirak in Hallettsville. He was a member of the American Legion, St. Isidore Society, St. Mary's Building Repair Committee, and St. Mary's Catholic Church of Hallettsville.
Leon was raised on the family farm in Hallettsville. He attended Mont School and graduated from Sacred Heart High School. Leon was a Staff Sergeant while serving in the Army National Guard Company B 1/141 Infantry, in Gonzales, TX. He worked in highway construction before beginning his trade in the leather industry in Yoakum and Sweet Home. After retirement, Leon spent his time farming and ranching.
Leon is survived by: 3 sisters, Elsie Orsak & husband R.L. of Hallettsville, Patty Mache & husband Milton of Schulenburg, and Lillie Smirak of Clear Lake; sister-in-law Pat Smirak of Yoakum; nieces and nephews, Melissa Jasek, Michael Mache, Richard Orsak, Tommy Mache, Sheila Etzler, Phyllis Jacobs, Pam Drozd, Peggy Smirak, and Valerie Steffek; and numerous great nieces & nephews.
Leon was preceded in death by; his parents, brother Phillip Smirak, and great nephew Bradyn Jacobs.
Funeral Mass Service: 1 pm, Monday, April 24, 2017, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: 4 pm, Sunday, at Kubena Funeral Home; with Rosary starting at 6 pm. Pallbearers: Michael Mache, Tommy Mache, Richard Orsak, Aaron Etzler, August Smirak, and Victor Welfl. Honorary Pallbearers: Robert Wagner and nieces. Officiant: Msgr. John Peters. Memorials: St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hospice of South Texas, or Donor's Choice. Burial: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
