Leo Hoffer, 90, of Hallettsville, passed away January 22, 2019. He was born March 13, 1928 to Leo and Minnie Hoffer, the fifth of six children. He married Evelyn Schneider on February 21, 1950 and together they raised four children.
Leo attended Sweet Home School and graduated from Yoakum High School. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and served as a Eucharistic Minister, on the Sacred Heart Parish Council and Sacred Heart School Board. He also served on the Board of Directors of First National Bank of Hallettsville, which later became Victoria Bank & Trust.
After high school Leo hauled hay, cattle, the US Mail and hauled cotton from Texas throughout the southern states as far as North Carolina. He was an International truck dealer for over fifty years. In 1979, he purchased Hoffer's Drive In Grocery from his brother, Nick Hoffer and it has been in the Hoffer family for the past sixty-five years.
His greatest passion was his ranch where he spent hours hunting and fishing with family and entertaining family and friends.
Leo is survived by his wife Evelyn, his four children: Beverly and husband Daniel Wagner, Sherry Hale, Lee Hoffer and Carol Woytek; six grandchildren: Cory Davis, Jaime (Pat) Flynn, Joel (Holly) Wagner, Michael Heath Hale, Brandon Woytek and Dusty Woytek; five great-grandchildren: Logan, Aubrey and Paige Davis, Lauren and Erin Flynn; one sister Catherine Wenzel.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters Lucy Kahanek and Elizabeth Hoffer, and two brothers Freddie and Nick Hoffer.
Funeral Mass Service : 10 am, Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: starting at 4 pm, Tuesday at Kubena Funeral Home; with the Rosary starting at 7 pm. Pallbearers: Brandon Woytek, Dusty Woytek, Heath Hale, Joel Wagner, James DeBord, and Logan Davis. Honorary Pallbearers: Past and present employees of Hoffer Truck Company, Hoffer's Drive In Grocery and Hoffer Ranch and his past and present Helping Hearts Sitter Service caregivers. Officiant: Msgr. John Peters and Father Matthew Huehlefeld. Memorials: Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Catholic School, Hospice of South Texas or donor's choice. Entombment: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
