Obituary

Mr. Lawrence Christ Sr., 78, was born on July 10, 1929 in Appelts Hill section of Hallettsville, TX to Henry & Emilia Schramm Christ Jr., passed away March 13, 2008. He was baptized on July 14, 1929 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and Life long member of the Knights of Columbus Local# 2433.

Lawrence grew up on his parent's farm and attended school thru grade school. Their family was close, working together; cotton was their main crop and their way of making a living. Having two sisters; Adela and Evelyn, and three brothers; Bennie, Leo, and Clarence, life was not boring. There were arguments, especially among the boys, even when they became men, but as Lawrence would say, "we still had the love of being brothers, no matter what." He enjoyed being a part of a good, loving, hard-working family. Attended church and listening to polka music was always a part of his life.

Going to Appelts Hill Hall and other local dance halls was the highlight of his entertainment. He met the love of his life, Eunice Ann Stary and they married on October 1, 1951 in Saints Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner. They lived in Sweet Home for about one year. Lawrence Jr. was born in Hallettsville on October 24, 1952. Then they moved to Houston where Lawrence worked for Jax & Lone Star Beer Co. He was a route beer salesman for 30 years and member of Brewery Workers Union Local# 1111 of Houston. Lee Roy was born in Houston in 1956. During those years he was in the "Go Texan Days: and in the summers was on the "slow pitch softball games" for the Company. Those beer boys knew how to play ball, always on Sunday afternoons for many years. He was a Little League Baseball Manager for approximately 10 years. Both his sons played baseball and he was their coach. He taught his sons the true meaning of hard work…helping them in their "Sons Lawn Business," which one son continues today.

Upon retirement, after building his new brick home, Lawrence and Eunice moved back to the farm at New Kinkler. He always had a way with animals - cows, dogs, and horses were always a part of his life. After a few years of retirement, he was asked by the boss of Shiner Brewery to come to work as a "Morale Booster" and train the young men. That he did for several years, until he was told about a reduction in the workforce. That's when he told his boss, I'm the old man, and the young men need their jobs and would do just fine." So back to the farm he went.

Then during his retirement years, he missed being around people. He always enjoyed visiting with people, so on his Doctor's request and his own desire to stay active, he volunteered at "Southern Manor Nursing Home." He worked one full year without missing a day - five days a week, just like a job. After about 3 years he won an award, "1995 T.H.C.A. Volunteer of the Year." He received statewide recognition at the "Texas Health Care Association Banquet" in Austin.

Eunice stated having strokes and his life changed to being her caregiver and taking charge of everything he could. All their going to dances and following one of their favorite polka bands "Bobby Jones" ended. However, they always listened to polka music on the radio, T.V. and tapes. Eunice went to H.R.N.C. in 2004 and Lawrence followed in 3 months. This, they had always talked and planned on doing when they had to.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Clarence Christ and Bennie H. Christ.

Lawrence is survived by: his wife Eunice Stary Christ of Hallettsville; 2 sons, Lawrence H. Christ Jr. & wife Maggie of Goliad, and Lee Roy Christ & wife Teri of Houston; 2 sisters, Adela Patlovany of Hallettsville, and Evelyn Mendel of Houston; brother Leo Christ of Hallettsville; and 3 grandchildren, Rachel Christ of Austin, Ryan Christ of Houston, and Luke Christ of Waco.
