Obituary

Larry Nelson Koehn, 72, of Hallettsville, passed away unexpectedly on June 28, 2019. He was born October 24, 1946, in Hallettsville, Texas to Oscar and Elner Dahse Koehn. His father, Oscar, passed at an early age and Larry was raised by his mother and grandparents.

Larry grew up in Weimar and graduated from Weimar High School in 1964. He then earned a Forestry degree from Stephen F. Austin University in 1969 and an MBA from East Texas State University in 1984. After graduation, he briefly worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Eureka, California before joining the U.S. Air Force as a KC-135 pilot, serving during the Vietnam War. While stationed at Ellsworth AFB, he met the love of his life, Barbara Bergman, and married her in a military ceremony June 17, 1972. He continued serving his country for twenty years and retired from the Air Force in 1990 as a Lt. Colonel.

Upon retiring from the Air Force, Larry flew for UPS from 1990 - 2010, flying the 747, 757/767, and DC-8 commercial aircraft during his tenure. After many moves, he and his wife Barb retired to Hallettsville, Texas in 2005. Larry loved being close to family, and enjoying the country life.

Larry was active in several local organizations; Vietnam Vets #854, Shiloh Community Center Board and Veterans of Foreign Wars, which he served as commander of Post 6382.

Larry was a loving dedicated Christian man, husband, dad, brother, and grandfather (Opa.) He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, serving as usher, a member of the church council and Men in Mission.

Larry is survived by: his devoted wife of 47 years, Barb; his sons, Jeff Koehn & wife Sara of Fairview, Texas, Mike Koehn & wife Lori of Houston, Texas; his five grandchildren, Eleanor, Paige, Maggie, Tyler and Blake; his sister Yleen George & husband Jimmy of Arlington, Texas; sisters-in-law, Missy Bergman and Sandra Uhland; nieces and nephews and many, many friends. Larry will also be missed by his faithful canine companion, Rover.

Larry was preceded in death by a sister, Brenda, his parents, and stepfather, Cecil Schutz.

Funeral Service: 10 am, Wednesday, July 3, 2019, at St. Peter Lutheran Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: 5 pm – 7 pm, Tuesday at Kubena Funeral Home. Pallbearers: Jeff Koehn, Mike Koehn, Jimmy George, Andrew George, Dennis Poppe and Shannon DeForest. Officiant: Pastor Jared Stillion. Memorials: St. Peter Lutheran Church or Donor's Choice. Burial: Shiloh Cemetery.
