Obituary

Julia Schindler Kallus, 94, of Hallettsville, passed away April 20, 2014. She was born on March 30, 1920 to Adolph & Agnes Schindler in Hallettsville the 6 th of 10 children. She married Louis R. Kallus on April 23, 1940 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville.

Julia's father died when she was 14 years old. Soon after his death, she went to Houston to find a job and worked as a nanny for a clothing store family (The Battlesteins). She would travel by train to and from Hallettsville to Houston.

Julia loved flowers, especially roses and red lilies. She enjoyed baking homemade bread, canning and gardening. She enjoyed listening to Polka music. Julia and her husband Louis ranched and farmed tomatoes, cotton, corn, and milo, and had a beautiful garden and pecan orchard which still exists today.

Julia cooked 3 full meals a day, and baked 3 loaves of bread daily, except on Sunday's. On Sunday's the entire family went to Sunday mass together. Then nearly all remaining time on Sundays were spent visiting with the aunts, uncles, and cousins either with them coming to her house or family traveling to the relatives homes, and always dinner and lunch were served. These were some of the most memorable times for the parents and children, those that were spent with the extended families on Sundays.

Julia is survived by: her 7 children, Annie Mae Henneke & husband Kenneth, Leroy Kallus & wife Janice, Agnes Gerlich & husband Hubert, Helen Technik & husband Mike, Joseph Kallus & wife Diane, Edward Kallus & wife Gail, and Michael Kallus & wife Lois, all of Hallettsville; son-in-law Albert Steffek of Edna; 19 grandchildren, Donna Tater, Warren Henneke, Amy Machicek, Brian Henneke, Melanie Hartt, Kevin Kallus, Lisa Grissom, Trey Gerlich, Ryan Gerlich, Brian Technik, Mark Technik, Jeff Kallus, Windey Baxter, Mandy Bucek, Angela Renger, Jennifer Steffek, Shane Steffek, Jamie Metting, and Wade Kallus; 23 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren.

Julia was preceded in death by: her husband Louis of 61 years; daughter Carolyn Steffek; parents; grandson Randall Henneke; 5 sisters, Albina Newman, Mary Watters, Agnes Donnelly, Carrie Schindler, Janie Chrascina; and 4 brothers, Adolph Jr., William (Bill), Robert (Bob), and Edward (Eddie) Schindler.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Hallettsville Rehab & Nursing Center, and Accolade Hospice for their devoted care. Also thanks to Msgr. John Peters for his visits and prayers.

Funeral Service: 11 am, Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: 4 pm, Wednesday, at Kubena Funeral Home. Rosary: 7 pm, Wednesday, at Kubena Funeral Home. Officiant: Msgr. John Peters. Pallbearers: Warren Henneke, Brian Technik, Ryan Gerlich, Wade Kallus, Jeffrey Kallus, and Shane Steffek. Memorials: Sacred Heart Catholic School or Capital Campaign, or Donor's Choice. Entombment: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
