Obituary

Johnnie A. Zak, 78, of Hallettsville, passed away Dec. 6, 2012. He was born on Nov. 3, 1934 to John & Albina Woytek Zak in Lavaca County, Texas. He married Helen Galetka on Oct. 29, 1960 at Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church. He was a member of S.P.J.S.T. Lodge #4; and a lifelong member of the Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church, where he was baptized, confirmed, married, served numerous years as a board member and officer, and now will be laid to rest.

Johnnie entered the US Army on August 22, 1957, he was a senior rifleman of the Fort Riley Kansas Rifle Team where he earned numerous shooting awards, and he was honorable discharged on May 21, 1959.

During Johnnie's lifetime, he worked for Reinhart Lumber Yard, and later went to work for Morgan Portable Building where he worked there for over 35 years until retiring. He enjoyed playing tennis with his wife and friends. He took pleasure in outdoor life of deer hunting and fishing. He liked to play cards and Tarock with family and friends when gathered together. He looked forward to going to the Senior Citizen Building to play Bingo and gathered for lunch.

Johnnie's grandchildren always held a special place in his heart. They always looked forward to going to his house for family gatherings.

Johnnie is survived by: 2 daughters, Kathleen Smolik & husband Melvin of Hallettsville, Jean Wick & husband Edward of Weimar; son John Zak & wife Anita of Hallettsville; 9 grandchildren, Tucker, Trevor, and Tracie Smolik; Samantha, Molly, and Amy Jo Wick; Claire, Emma, and Cal Zak; and sister Leona (Zak) Miculka & husband Milton of Hallettsville.

Johnnie was preceded in death by; his wife Helen; daughter Arlene (Zak) Koehn; parents; brother Vernon Zak.

Funeral Service: 10 am, Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church. Visitation: 4 pm, Tuesday at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville. Prayer Service: 7 pm, Tuesday at Kubena Funeral Home. Officiate: Rev. Mark Labaj. Pallbearers: Tucker Smolik, Trevor Smolik, David Zak, Cameron Zak, Alan Koehn, and Jimmy Koerth. Burial: Vsetin Cemetery. Memorials: Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church or Donor's choice.
