He was a member of Lions Club, Texas Young Farmers, past president of Hallettsville Young Farmers, life member of the VFW #6382, Murchison Masonic Lodge # 80 of Hallettsville, Houston Farm & Ranch Club, chaired HISD Facilities Committee, member of Fort Bend County and Harris County Fairs. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church of Hallettsville where he served as a member of the First United Methodist Church Foundation Board and Administrative Board.
John was a life member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for 20 years serving as a committeeman on the Horsepitality Committee. He was named a Lifetime Committeeman of the Show in 2010; he devoted many hours volunteering with the show and enjoyed sharing stories of these events. He also rode several years on the Saltgrass Trail Ride in Wagon #8.
FFA and agricultural education played an important part in molding John's life and throughout the years stayed a devoted supporter and friend of many FFA members in Hallettsville. In his younger years, John was an active member and officer of the Hallettsville FFA during his high school years and loved showing pigs and chickens at the Hallettsville FFA Project Show. In 2003-2004 he was awarded the Honorary Chapter Farmer Degree for his love in supporting youth in agriculture.
John moved back to his parent's home place in 2005 where he enjoyed watching his cattle graze from his front porch. He was born to fish but forced to work and enjoyed a great game of golf every week.
John is survived by: the love of his life Bernice Brown of Victoria; uncle and aunt, Jack & Norma Worthy of Baton Rouge, LA, aunt Willa Jean Worthy of Arcadia, OK, uncle and aunt, Frankie & Lucille Klekar of Hallettsville; special cousin Ella Mae Bludau of Hallettsville; special friends, Dean, Brenda and Ashley Schmidt, and Terry & Sara Wick; and pets, Skipper (his horse) and Snert (his dog).
John was preceded in death by: his parents and sister, Marinell Klekar.
Funeral Service: 3 pm, Sunday, May 20, 2012, at First United Methodist Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: 4 pm, Saturday at Kubena Funeral Home. Officiate: Rev. Lundy Hooten. Pallbearers: Bryant Sitka, James Wick, Emma Wick, Kelsey Steffek, Braden Kahanek, Kurtis Steffek, Marshall Hajek, and Logan Herrington. Honorary Pallbearers: all members of the Hallettsville FFA Chapter. Burial: Hallettsville City Cemetery. Memorials: Hallettsville FFA Chapter, PO Box 368, Hallettsville, TX 77964.
