He was born April 6, 1930 to Guy and Theresia Sitka Greer; after his father's death in 1936 he spent his formative years on the farm, helping his mother and playing baseball at every opportunity. John married his lifelong love, Virginia Lucille Roeber, on June 27, 1951, and they were blessed with 63 years together. The only time they spent apart were the two years John served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War.
John worked for many years for the Texas Department of Transportation; after his retirement he spent his remaining years ranching and raising many varieties of pigeons, chickens, ducks, geese…If it had feathers, chances are that it passed through John's menagerie at one time or another. John also loved to dance, and he and Virginia waltzed across Texas a time or two with their friends in the P.O.L.K. of A. On the 1st of May, 2000, John joined his father and uncles as a member of the South Central Texas Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame.
John is survived by his loving wife, Virginia; daughter, Ruth Ann Schneider and son-in-law, Mark; grandchildren, Amanda Echols and husband Shawn, Jonathan Schneider, and Natalie Gard and husband Jonathan; the apples of his eye, his great-granddaughters, Lila Greer Echols, Audrey Lane Echols, and Landry Cate Echols. He is also survived by one sister, Evelyn Spann and her husband, Adolph.
