Obituary

Jean Nussbaum Schwartz died in Hallettsville, Texas on March 20, 2009. She was born in Marlin, Texas on December 16, 1916 to Mildred Frank Nussbaum and Herman Nussbaum. Jean grew up in Galveston and graduated from Ball High School. She attended the University of Texas where she was awarded both a B.A. in 1937 and an M.A. in English in 1939. She was one of five students elected to Phi Beta Kappa as a Junior student. Ms. Schwartz was a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi social sorority. After graduation from college Ms. Schwartz taught in the Galveston public schools until her marriage to attorney Armond G. Schwartz, Sr. in 1946. She moved with her husband to Hallettsville, Texas where she resided the rest of her life.

Mimi, as she was known by her family, had two children with her husband Armond: Marcus Frank Schwartz, Sr. and Armond G. Schwartz, Jr. M.D. She was active in many organizations throughout her life and was a brilliant woman who believed in education, charity, and equality for every human being. Mimi possessed extraordinary writing skills, vocabulary, and intelligence. She will be remembered for her quick wit and for the many friends whose lives she touched.

She was very proud of her sons, her daughters-in-law Amy Gillis Schwartz of Hallettsville and Cindy Cohen Schwartz of Dallas, and her grandchildren, Marcus F. Schwartz, Jr., Robyn Schwartz Siegel, Gillis G. Schwartz, Armond G. Schwartz III, Adelaide G. Schwartz and Andrew J. Schwartz.

Ms. Schwartz was preceded in death by her husband, Armond G. Schwartz, Sr. and her brother, Frank Nussbaum of Galveston, and her parents. The family would especially like to thank Katie and Marlene Goode who were dedicated friends and assistants to both Mimi and Armond, Sr and made their later lives enjoyable.

In lieu of usual remembrances , the family asks that donations be made to the Armond G. Schwartz and Jean N. Schwartz Endowed Presidential Scholarship in Law at the University of Texas School of Law or the charity of your choice.
