IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James Alton
Evans Iii
September 11, 1963 – January 11, 2024
Jim Evans, who is the beloved husband of Nancy Evans, the father of Jacob, Joseph and James, and father-in-law of Jacob's wife Jenna, son of James and Judy Evans, and brother of John, Jeff, and Wes and their wives Jenice and Amanda, passed away January 11, 2024 after a short illness, close to his family and friends. Born in Hallettsville, Texas on September 11, 1963; Jim was raised mostly in Spring, Texas with frequent stays in Hallettsville visiting his beloved grandparents Lucille "Granny" and Gibby Gerdes "Pop" and James and Myrtle Evans. As a young boy and throughout his teens, he enjoyed helping with the family ranch responsibilities and raising his own animals. He especially loved spending time with Pop, accompanying him around town, getting to know all of the older generation, and making many fond memories that he loved to share for years to come.
Proudly following in his father's footsteps, Jim attended and graduated from the University of Texas, Austin. He majored in business and minored in Spanish. He then went on to attend and graduated from St. Edward's University in Austin receiving an MBA in 1989. After struggling to find suitable work with his degrees in Texas, he landed a position in Maryland where he met his wife, Nancy, as members of a local Catholic singles organization. After a couple of years of courting, they married in Takoma Park, Maryland in May of 1993 where they stayed active members of their parish.
Over the next 10 years he worked for MetLife as a financial planner/representative in the DC/Maryland area where they began to raise a family and assist in the care of Nancy's elderly parents, Brian and Lorice Norwood. Before their boys came along, Jim and Nancy shared their favorite past time of traveling and visiting various east coast beaches as well Germany, France, Switzerland, and England to visit with Nancy's brother, George, and his family. In 2001 they were blessed with their first son, Jacob Alfred, and again in 2004 and 2006 with the arrival of Joseph Anthony and James Brian. As a family, they enjoyed taking road trips making fond memories on summer breaks or at Christmas, especially when visiting family in Texas.
Jim made a career change in 2002 to become a Spanish school teacher. He was always drawn to the Spanish language/culture and had dreams of going back to visiting Spain as he once did during college. He especially wanted to experience the cathedral of St. James in Compostela in honor of his patron saint. Jim eventually was able to fill a job opening in Schulenburg, Texas as High School Spanish teacher in 2013, giving him and the rest of the family the opportunity to return to his beloved Texas and live near his Texas family. Loading up the Maryland family, including mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and the boys and dogs was quite an adventure for the entire family (often compared to the move depicted in his favorite childhood show "Beverly Hillbillies"). Everyone eventually settled into their new home and was especially grateful to spend more time with grandma and grandpa Evans and uncles, aunts, and cousins.
After a few years in Texas, Jim went into property appraising, but was especially happy in 2023 when he was recertified to teach and became a Spanish teacher for Cedar Creek High School in the same district where Nancy was a teaching assistant in Bastrop, Texas. It was there he hoped to continue working until he retired.
Jim was a devout Catholic and knew how to prepare spiritually, physically, and mentally for this life and the next by frequenting the sacraments, exercising, and always working to provide for the needs of his family and willing to help a friend or stranger. He will be dearly missed on our earthly journeys without him.
