Hubert J. Etzler, 101, of Hallettsville, passed away Feb. 6, 2019. He was born on Oct. 14, 1917, to Paul & Hedwig Leopold Etzler in Hallettsville; he was the first of seven children. He attended Sacred Heart School and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Hubert was a devout catholic and a very kind & hard working person. He helped his father on the farm, plowing, planting, harvesting, and raising cattle and chickens.
Hubert was called for active duty by the US Army on March 20, 1942. He did 4 months of basic training and his specialty was Auto Mechanic. He obtained the rank of TEC 5 when he was honorably discharged on Nov. 8, 1945. He received; 1 Service Stripe, 1 Overseas Service Bar, the Victory Ribbon, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 bronze service stars for the Rhineland & Central Europe Campaigns. He loved to tell about his time in the army and the places it took him. He was very proud to have served his country.
Hubert married Margaret Ann Haas on Nov. 5, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville.
Hubert worked in Hallettsville his whole life and upon retirement, he enjoyed his hobby of woodworks. He built many Martin Bird houses, doghouses, Christmas yard art and many special things requested by family and friends. He was very proud of the things he built and gave many away to family, friends and picnic auctions. He will truly be missed for his kindness, generosity and for the very special person that he was.
Hubert is survived by: brother Arthur Etzler, sister Evelyn Ahlgrim and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hubert was preceded in death by: his wife Margaret; parents; and 4 sisters, Regina Pagel, Helen Kresta, Lilly Sitka and Adela Grahmann.
Funeral Mass Service: 10 am, Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation: 5 pm, Monday, at Kubena Funeral Home with Rosary starting at 7 pm. Officiant: Msgr. John Peters. Memorials: Sacred Heart Catholic Church/School or Donor's Choice. Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
