July 22, 1919 – September 27, 2012
Hubert was a veteran of WWII and served in the US Army. He received the Good Conduct Medal; Asiatic – Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 bronze service stars for the Bismark Archipelago, New Guinea, Southern Philippines, and Luzon Campaigns, with a bronze Arrowhead for participation in an amphibious assault landing; WWII Victory Medal; Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze service star; the Distinguished Unit Badge (Army Presidential Unit Citation); one Service Stripe; and 5 Overseas Service Bars.
Upon being Honorably Discharged after serving our country, he returned home to continue farming with his parents. On May 13, 1946, he married the love of his life, Bernadette "Bunny" Buss. They were blessed to celebrate 53 wonderful years together. They moved to Houston, Texas where Hubert graduated from the University of Houston and moved back to Hallettsville. He began his career with Shell Oil Company in Providence City and Sheridan, Texas. He retired after 35 years of service and never missed a day of work.
Hubert was full of love and life. He enjoyed gardening, dancing, playing dominoes, spending summers at the coast fishing and sharing time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Known as Grandpa "Zhaba", he enjoyed watching the kids participate in their sports, whether it was staying in Hallettsville, or traveling to Austin, Lolita, Sugar Land, Stafford, Richmond or Rosenberg, he was there cheering them on. Everyone called him "Grandpa" or "Pops"; he was never a stranger to anyone.
Hubert is survived by: his eight children, 2 sons, Robert & wife Tawnya of Sugar Land, and John & companion Judy of Lolita; 6 daughters, Cheryl Jansky & husband "Boggie" of Hallettsville, Martha Quast & husband Larry of Australia, Kathleen Roth of Rosenberg, Francine Rother & husband Larry of Austin, Debbie Dornak of Richmond, and Lisa Noser & husband Jeff of Richmond; 15 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hubert was preceded in death by: his wife "Bunny"; his parents; parent-in-laws Carl and Hilda Buss; 11 brothers, Augustin, Joe, Rudolph, Charlie, Willie, Gus, Mike, Louis, Albert, Tom, and Otto; and 5 sisters, Julie, Eleanore, Pauline, Beatrice, and Lucy.
Hubert was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be remembered for his love and devotion to his family and friends forever.
Funeral Mass Service: 10 am, Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: 4 pm, Sunday at Kubena Funeral Home. Rosary: 7 pm, Sunday at Kubena Funeral Home. Officiate: Rev. Melvin Dornak. Pallbearers: Brian and Shane Steffek, Tad Jansky, Kyle and Jason Rother, Josh Roth, and Peyton Noser. Honorary Pallbearers: Tanya Woytek, Tina Jansky, Kelley Dornak, Jessica Ferguson, Megan Fults, Tiffany Dornak, DeDe Merrick, and Kaitlin Noser. Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Memorials : Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hospice of South Texas, or Donor's Choice.
