Obituary

Helen Ann Shimek-Malick, 86 of Hallettsville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at 2:07 pm. Helen was born May 4, 1930 in Charlottenburg, TX, to Rudy and Veronika Kurtz. She was a homemaker and musician who loved to play polka music with her family and friends.  She was a member of the Rudy Kurtz Orchestra, Wence Shimek band, and the Shiner Hobo band and organist at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hallettsville. She also enjoyed hosting the Wence and Helen Polka show on KRJH radio.

Helen is survived by: children, Sister Ann Francis Shimek, Patricia Henke, Dennis Shimek & wife Darlene, Katherine Bordovsky & husband John, Nick Shimek & wife Karen, Martin Shimek & wife Patsy, Stanley Shimek & wife Anita, Tom Shimek, Mary Lux & husband Darrell, Dottie Leopold & husband Kenneth, James Shimek & wife Barbara, Paul Shimek & wife Lisa, Andy Shimek & wife JoAnn; brothers, Laddie Kurtz & wife Rita, Ernest Kurtz & wife Miranda; 37 grandchildren; and 32 great grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by: her first husband Wence Shimek, her second husband J.J. Malick, parents; brothers, Edward, Daniel, and Rudy Kurtz; and grandson Jonathon Shimek.

Funeral Mass Service: 11 am, Monday, February 13, 2017, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: 4 pm, Sunday, at Kubena Funeral Home with Rosary at 6 pm. Pallbearers: Aaron Henke, Nick Shimek Jr., Scott Shimek, Joshua Leopold, Brier Shimek, and Drew Shimek. Officiant: Msgr. John Peters. Memorials: Wence Shimek Sacred Heart Band Scholarship Fund or Donor's Choice. Burial: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
