IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gus Anthony
Berkenhoff
September 14, 1948 – December 22, 2015
Gus Anthony Berkenhoff passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack at the age of 67 on December 22nd, 2015 in his hometown of Hallettsville. He was born on September 14, 1948 in Hallettsville to the late Julia Riebschlaeger and Gus Berkenhoff Sr. Gus is survived by his wife: Cathy Berkenhoff; children Misty Targac and husband Chris, and Mindy Bogan and husband Paul; brother Randy Hartmann and wife Charlotte, sister Susie Brisco; grandchildren, Brittany, Cassidy, Ryan Targac and Will and Sam Bogan.
Gus graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1967 and went into the army shortly thereafter. Gus was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War. He married Cathy Pohl on August 14th, 1968 in Hawaii. In his younger years Gus loved playing softball with his friends, going on trail rides and helping out in rodeos in Hallettsville. When they were blessed with two children, Misty and Mindy, Gus's hobbies turned to watching his children play sports. Gus loved to garden, cook and tell stories. Gus was married to Cathy for 47 years and was employed by HB Zachary for over 30 years. He retired at age 62 and spent his leisure time visiting his grandchildren Will and Sam in Taylor and watching Brittany, Cassidy and Ryan at their sporting events and tending to his beloved dog Spock. He loved fishing, visiting and making sausage with his brother, Randy and his family. The highlight of his later years was the annual family hunting trip provided by his nephew. The annual family reunions were a fun time for all the family to spend time together. Gus was known for his storytelling ability, his beard and ponytail and his wonderful cooking. Gus's family was the most important thing to him.
Gus was preceded in death by: his father, Gus Berkenhoff Sr.; his step-father, Henry Hartmann; his mother, Julia Hartmann and his brother-in-law Weldon Brisco.
We would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
