IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gladys
Devall
March 27, 1933 – July 23, 2023
Gladys Devall, age 90, of Hallettsville, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2023; in the Guadalupe Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Seguin where she had been residing since October 2022.
Gladys Schaefer Devall was born March 27, 1933, at Appelt's Hill to Alfred and Vera Schultz Schaefer. She attended grade school at New Kinkler and Pleasant Grove. Gladys graduated from Hallettsville High School in 1951 where she was an active participant in FHA, class secretary, basketball, and the pep squad. She continued her education at the Baldwin Business College, Yoakum, Texas, and then in 1952, she accepted a position as an assistant bookkeeper at Renger Clinic, Hallettsville, Texas.
On December 19,1954 she married William Bagby Devall at St. James Episcopal Church in Hallettsville. That same month, Gladys graduated as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) and worked many years in the Renger Clinic and Hospital in Hallettsville, as well as the Edgar B. Davis Memorial Hospital in Luling Texas. She was always busy helping her three daughters with school activities. In Luling, Gladys worked as a product demonstrator at local stores and for eight years as a bookkeeper at Citizen's State Bank in Luling. As an active member of the Annunciation Episcopal Church in Luling, Gladys served as the treasurer for the building fund.
In 1982, Bill and Gladys Devall returned to her Appelt's Hill homestead where she continued to keep very busy. She did countless hours of volunteer work in the Hallettsville community. With great pride she accepted the Sword of Hope Award and Dr. Everett Renger Sr. Memorial Award as a dedicated volunteer driver for over 18 years for the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery program. She served as treasurer for Zion Lutheran Church in Sublime, for over 10 years as well as a member of the church council. Gladys was a Lifetime member of the Appelt's Hills Gun Club, Inc. and she served in 2008 as vice President of the organization. Beginning in 1983, Gladys was responsible for booking social events at the AHGC, Inc. and she closely watched that property located across from her homestead. While her husband, Billy was a resident of Stevens Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for over 8 years, Gladys visited him nearly every day while caring for him at mealtimes until his passing in February 10, 2011. She also volunteered at the center to assist with other residents.
Personally, Gladys enjoyed piecing quilts and quilting for family and many friends. She was active in piecing, tacking, and hemming quilts for the World Relief Organization, and she created many handmade heirlooms for her family. She enjoyed gardening and canning pickles for family and friends while taking care of a small herd of cattle, but she especially enjoyed visits from her family.
Gladys Devall is survived by her three daughters; Vera Brown (Kenneth) of Luling; Iris Grein (Greg) of Seguin; and Virginia Axtell (Robert) of San Antonio; five grandchildren Heather Hudgens (Michael) of New Braunfels, Trisha Grein (Bryan Brietzke) of Seguin, Kimberlee Barrett (Paul) of Selma, Cary Fullen (Kristy) of Henderson, NV, and John Fullen (Nichol) of Bellville; and twelve great-grandchildren.
