Obituary

George W. Gummelt passed away at Lavaca Medical Center on Aug 17, 2009 at the age of 83 years, 10 months, and 23 days. He was born on Sept 25, 1925 to Eric and Ida Kaase Gummelt in Moulton, Texas, baptized Oct 4, 1925, and confirmed Sept 17, 1939 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Vsetin. George was the oldest of three children and as a young boy the family moved to the Vsetin community. He attended a parochial and public school in Vsetin and graduated from Hallettsville High School in 1942.

George was drafted into the United States military during World War II entering the U.S. Navy on July 12, 1944 and honorably discharged on June 21, 1946. Later he married Irene Spies on July 17, 1951 at St John's Lutheran Church, Shiloh.

George was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sublime and served as treasurer for many years. He was a member of the VFW Post #6382 and American Legion Post #230, and served on the San Bernard Electric Cooperative advisory board.

George worked in the public sector, serving as an HISD school bus driver for 34 years and school census enumerator, Neumeyer service station attendant, ASC office agent, Hal-Tex truck driver, worker at Barnes Feed Mill, and agent for Hocheim Prairie Farm Mutual Insurance. In addition, he was a farmer and rancher throughout his life, planting cotton and corn, and raising cattle.

George enjoyed stamp collecting, joke telling, and reading Zane Grey westerns and Reader's Digest. He kept a file of mementos on each of his children and grandchildren showing everyone how special family was to him.

George is survived by: his wife Irene of 58 years; 4 daughters, Janis Muehr & Husband LA, LaVerne Eschberger & husband LaNoal, Ruth Muehr & husband Donald all of Hallettsville, and Debra Pieniazek & husband Jack of Conroe; brother David Gummelt & wife Barbora of Hallettsville; sister Majorie Ely & husband Bob of Austin; 9 grandsons, Leonard Muehr & wife Priya, Layton Muehr & wife Jenny, Leland Muehr & wife April, Lamont Muehr, Adrian Eschberger, Blane Eschberger & wife Anne Marie, Clayton Muehr, Ethan Pieniazek, and Noah Pieniazek; 3 granddaughters, Erin Koehne & husband Chris, Sheri Finke & husband Roger, and Laura Muehr; and 4 great grandchildren, Sierra Koehne, Cade Koehne, Pazia Muehr, and Dilan Finke.

George was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral: 10 am, Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009 at Sublime Zion Lutheran Church. Visitation: 4 pm, Wednesday, at Kubena Funeral Home. Prayer Service: 7 pm, Wednesday at Kubena Funeral Home. Pallbearers: Grandsons; Leonard, Layton Muehr, Leland Muehr, Lamont Muehr, Adrian Eschberger, Blane Eschberger, Clayton Muehr, Ethan Pieniazek, and Noah Pieniazek . Honorary Pallbearers: Laura Muehr, Erin Koehne, Chris Koehne, Sierra Koehne, Cade Koehne, Sheri Finke, Roger Finke, Dilan Finke, Priya Muehr, Pazia Muehr, Jenny Muehr, April Muehr, and Anne Marie Eschberger. Officiates: Rev Herb Beyer, and Rev. J. R. Westerfield. Memorials: Sublime Zion Lutheran Church or American Heart Association. Burial: Hallettsville City Cemetery.
