Obituary

Gene Marie Bohuslav of Komensky, passed away at the age of 87.  She was born in Lavaca County to Emilie (Janek) and Charles Ben Halata.  She attended her early school years at Moravia School and graduated from Moulton High School.  While in high school, she was chosen to attend Texas Girls State.

On June 12, 1955, she married Arnold Frank Bohuslav at the Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in Moravia.  Until Arnold's passing on January 11, 2016, Gene Marie and Arnold celebrated 60 years together.

Gene Marie was a loving homemaker and worked hard in support of "her Arnie's" farming and ranching career and raising their five children.  She sewed all her first three daughters' clothes, with major attention to detail, until the youngest came along and Gene Marie decided it was time to shop for ready-made clothes for all her girls.

After their youngest started school, Gene Marie worked at the Sears Mail Order Store on the square in Hallettsville for ten years.  She loved working there as it gave her a wonderful connection to friends she made "in town."  Gene Marie never met a stranger, and she and Arnold always encouraged their children to be open and inviting to making new friends.

Gene Marie was a great cook and especially loved making Czech goodies, including all her mom's recipes of kolaches, strudels, rosettes, and homemade noodles for her chicken noodle soup which her kids and grandkids looked forward to every holiday.  Her passion for cooking and baking along with her recipes were written up in local magazine articles.  In 2008, she was asked to demonstrate making several of her specialty recipes at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. Her family happily joined her in support and made the trip a memorable vacation.

Gene Marie developed a lifelong love of quilting beginning with learning from her great aunts.  Her passion continued making sure each of her grandchildren received a hand-sewn quilt upon their high school graduation and on their wedding day.

Gene Marie was very active in the Texas Extension Education Association (EEA) of Lavaca County and traveled with her friends wherever they were meeting.  She was a lifelong KJZT member, a member of the Lavaca Memorial VFW Auxiliary and a member of the Moravia Altar Society.  She survived cancer soon after having their youngest child and in later years was recognized as the "longest cancer survivor in Lavaca County."

Gene Marie was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and granddaughter Annye Mae Bohuslav.

Gene is survived by:  son Gary Bohuslav (Jacki) of Sherman, TX; four daughters, Rene Matula (Mark) of Mansfield, TX, Beverly Jansky (Patrick), Jackie Bludau (Billy) of Hallettsville, TX and Pamela Muenster (Darren) of Liberty Hill, TX; ten grandchildren, Garrett Bohuslav (Monica), Jami Blackburn (Brantley), Heather Stone (Shane), Lydia Walker (Lance), Hannah Matula, Erin Rygg (Matt), Emilie Walker (Layne), Alex Bludau (Mikayla), Robbie Strmiska (Hayden) and Logan Muenster; and five great grandchildren, Cru and Lawsyn Walker, Barrett Blackburn, Ella Stone and Jax Walker.
