During Herb's service in the Navy, he received the Navy Commendation Medal with bronze letter "V", Navy Good Conduct Medal with 4 bronze service stars, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one silver service star and 2 bronze service stars; World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, China Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze service stars, and United Nations Service Medal.
Herb is survived by: 5 sons, Jim, John, Andrew & Paul Wassberg, and Dennis Crissman; 2 daughters, Chris Wassberg and Kathleen Banegas; sister Anna Chiapetta; 25 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and friend Evelyn Kresta.
Herb was preceded in death by: his wife Nadine; parents; 3 brothers, William, Don and Carl Wassberg; and sister Mildred Effinter.
Funeral Mass Service: 11:30 am, Saturday, May 5, 2012, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: 4 pm, Friday at Kubena Funeral Home. Rosary: 7 pm, Friday at Kubena Funeral Home. Officiate: Rev. John Peters. Pallbearers: Jim Wassberg, John Wassberg, Andrew Wassberg, Paul Wassberg, Carl Wassberg, and John Wassberg Jr. Burial: Praha Catholic Cemetery of Praha, Texas. Memorials: St. Mary's Catholic Church or Donor's Choice.
