Faye Marie Vavrusa

Faye Marie Vavrusa, 94, of Hallettsville, lovingly known as Marie and Aunt Ree, went peacefully into the arms of Jesus on March 8, 2026. She was born on December 21, 1931, to Luther Monroe & Alva Stubbs Robinson near Dayton, Texas. She was the youngest of seven children. At an early age, she worked at the family sawmill with her siblings. She made $2 a day to carry off bark slabs and shovel saw dust.

Marie graduated from Dayton High School and went to work in Liberty as a telephone operator. A friend’s boyfriend had a roommate named Joe, a blind date was set, and the rest was history. They married soon thereafter and moved to Bay City for work. There, Joe and Marie welcomed their first child. Later, they moved to Dayton and had four more children, eventually moving to the Vavrusa homeplace in Hallettsville, where she lived the rest of her life.

Marie loved listening to birds and watching the pasture for any new calves. She enjoyed all sports, especially the Astros. She loved playing the card game Pitch, which she learned as a young girl by watching her parents, and aunts and uncles play. She passed the game down to her children and grandchildren. She would play with her family for hours, and she especially loved to WIN. She also enjoyed canning pickles and jelly, frying pancakes, and baking her famous cornbread dressing and homemade biscuits. She loved her family and having get-togethers at her house. Spending time with her family was her favorite pastime, even if just sharing a cup of coffee. Her love of Jesus was shown through the way she cared for her family, always ready with an open ear and a full plate.

Marie is survived by: her sons, Gary (Mary) Vavrusa of Hallettsville and Mark Vavrusa of Cuero; daughters, Alva Buzek and Patricia (Russell) Honish; son-in-law Ricky Zavesky, all of Hallettsville; grandchildren, Jennifer, Wendy, Carrie, Clay, Jessica, Kim, Aneska, Lindsay, Alyssa, Ariana and Braxton; fifteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces & nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by: her parents; husband Joseph Vavrusa; daughter Karen Ruth Zavesky; son-in-law David Buzek; sisters, Annie Brooks, Lorena Johnson and Dorothy Caldwell; brothers, Theron Robinson, Raymond (Bill) Robinson and Oma Lee Robinson.

The family wishes to thank you all for your prayers, thoughts, kind words, support, and love during the loss of our beloved mother and grandmother, Faye Marie.
