Evelyn M. Sklar, 96 of Hallettsville passed away December 4, 2020. She was born on August 15, 1924 to Emil and Emilie Melnar in Hallettsville. She was a long time faithful member of the Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethern Church and a dedicated member of the Vsetin Christian Sisters.
Evelyn married the love of her life, Elo H. Sklar on July 24, 1942 in Hallettsville where they made their lifetime home. Evelyn & Elo were blessed with two children, a son – Leonard & daughter Charlene.
Evelyn was a hard working dedicated employee. She was employed at Weingarten Inc for many years until they closed. She then worked at Kaspar Wire Works in Shiner and Utex in Weimar until the drive was too much. After, she then went to work for Kountry Bakery and retired from there after 13 years as a baker.
In 1997, Evelyn was honored to be named Kolache Queen. She loved to bake home bread, kolaches, pies and cakes. She also canned pears and sauerkraut, but was famous for her cold packed pickles in her gallon jars.
Evelyn was a resident at Stevens Nursing and Rehab Center in Hallettsville for 20 years. She enjoyed playing bingo, dominoes, working on crafts and other projects. With the excellent care from all the staff members throughout the years, she always considered this her home.
Evelyn is survived by her son Leonard and wife Mary Sklar and daughter Charlene Leopold all of Hallettsville. Evelyn had 6 grandchildren, Cheryl (Steve) Leopold, Connie (Scott) Janak, Cynthia (Dr. Warren) Migura, Dr. Paul (Amber) Sklar, all of Hallettsville, Ronald (Heather) Leopold of Helotes, Roxanne (Kyle) Horton of Austin; 17 Great grandchildren, Kyle and Jaden Leopold, Brittany (Dusty) Keller, Alyse (Caden Fishbeck -fiancé) and Chase Janak, Sydney, Seth and Shane Migura, Ty, Reese, Ryne and Rhett Sklar, all of Hallettsville, Ashley Leopold of Lubbock, Mason and McKenna Leopold of Helotes and Seth and Sara Horton of Austin and 1 great great grandson – Jax Keller.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Elo H. Sklar of 64 years of marriage, her parents, 5 sisters – Hermana Vasek, Elsie Dusek, Irene Vornsand, Stella Blaha and Lucy Ubnoski and 2 brothers – Albert and Alvin Melnar.
Visitation: 5 pm, Sunday, December 6, 2020, at Kubena Funeral Home of Hallettsville, TX; and at 7 am to 12 noon, Monday at Kubena Funeral Home. Pallbearers: Steve Leopold, Scott Janak, Dr. Warren Migura, Dr. Paul Sklar, Kyle Leopold and Chase Janak. Memorials: Czech Moravian Brethren Church of Vsetin, TX, or Donor's Choice. A Private Family Graveside Service will be held.
