Obituary

Evelyn Hildegarde Machart Schaefer, 96, of Hallettsville, on Friday, October 31, 2025, she left us to be with her heavenly Father and late husband Weldon.  She was born August 6, 1929, in Lavaca County to Raymond & Hilda (Derrich) Machart.  She was the oldest of 8 children.

Evelyn and Weldon were married on November 24, 1947.  They were married for 60 years when he passed away on April 5, 2008.  She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of Americas for over 50 years and also began working with the Bereavement Committee in 1996.

When Evelyn and Weldon first got married in 1947, she worked at Ben's Café.  In the early 50's she worked at Ben Franklins after it opened.  Then in the late 50's she worked in the Cigar Factory on the square.  In 1963, she worked as an Avon lady until 1970, then she and Weldon bought the Schaefer Drive Inn (what is now Helping Hearts on Texana St.).  She owned and loved her antique and Resale shop "The What-Not-Shop" since 1974 and later on, her daughter Diane would also join her in the antique business.  She was also her husband's bookkeeper for the 58 years he was in the dozer business.

In recent years, Evelyn loved watching her grandson Weston play soccer and attempting to beat Tommy and Diane at dominoes on the average weekend afternoon.  She proudly displayed her granddaughter Raegan's art pieces and was always happy to share the latest antics of little Savanna.  She was a fighter and loved life.  She will be missed by so many and was loved by all.

Evelyn loved her family so very much.  Helping to care for her great granddaughter, Raegan, was a treasured gift after Weldon passed away in 2008.  She also loved to go to garage sales and work with her antiques.  She enjoyed playing cards and dominos and loved going gambling.  She liked fishing and enjoyed going to dances with friends in the old days.

Evelyn was so proud to be a Godmother to her 6 Godchildren, Roy & Douglas Schaefer, James Pierce, Mary Ann Koenig, Sharon Jansky and Barbara Pelzel.

Evelyn is survived by:  daughter Diane & Tommy Kainer of Hallettsville; granddaughter Robin Kainer of Victoria; three great grandchildren, Raegan Koncaba of Corpus Christi, Weston Koncaba and Savanna Krueger of Victoria; sisters, Ann Arnold McDonald & Jim of El Campo, Marilyn Lutringer of Houston and Sharon Johnston & Billy of Brenham; brother Melvin Machart & Charlene of Cold Spring; sister-in-law Bobbie Machart of Conroe; brother-in-law Calvin Schaefer of Hallettsville; a host of nieces & nephews and many many other family and dear friends.
