Evelyn S. Konvicka, 73, of Hallettsville went to be with her Lord and Savior at her ranch home on Friday morning, August 14, 2015. She was born on Dec. 4, 1941, to Fredrich and Frances Kobza Shimek in Schulenburg. She married Laddie M. Konvicka on April 16, 1966 in Praha, TX.
Evelyn graduated in 1960 from Schulenburg High School. She retired from Texaco, Inc. after 33 years of service. Evelyn and Laddie enjoyed ranching at their weekend home in St. Mary's and moved to St. Mary's in the summer of 1999 to continue their hobbies of ranching, fishing and deer hunting. Evelyn loved her ranching activities and driving her tractors. Evelyn and Laddie also hosted as parents to two exchange students Karolina Kvitkova and Terezie Sedlinska from Prague, of the Czech Republic.
Evelyn was blessed with a love for music, singing, crocheting and played various instruments. She enjoyed baking delicious kolaches, strudels and other assorted goods and brought them to many events. She was chosen Kolache Queen at the 2005 Hallettsville Kolache Festival. She loved her companion dog Maverick and enjoyed watching Elvis Presley and John Wayne movies and listening to polkas, waltzes and George Strait. She enjoyed going to the Gaslight Theatre in Shiner with her friends. She loved feeding and watching hummingbirds, other birds and deer from her bay window. She loved her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-greats. She loved being a godmother to many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews.
Evelyn and Laddie enjoyed leading grand marches at family weddings. Evelyn loved making her homemade mustang grape wine, which she enjoyed sharing with family and friends. Many bottles of her wine were donated to auctions. Evelyn was a devoted Christian at St. Mary's Catholic Church. She was a member of the St. Mary's Czech Choir, a church cantor, Eucharistic minister and the Altar Society of St. Mary's church. She was a member and secretary of the Czech Heritage Society, the Hallettsville Red Hat Ladies and Lavaca County Farm Bureau.
Evelyn is survived by: 4 brothers, Harvey Shimek & wife Nell of Alvin, Felix Shimek of Houston, Werner Shimek & wife Charlene of Houston, and Marvin Shimek & wife Jeanie of Shiner; 3 sisters, Gladys Hoelscher & husband Leo of Weimar, Valerine Christ & husband Alton of Houston, and Georgia Klesel & husband John of Houston; 2 sisters-in-law, Rosalie Shimek of Dallas and Rosemary Shimek of LaGrange; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews.
Evelyn was preceded in death by: her husband Laddie; parents; 4 brothers, Otto, Melvin, Ewald and Benjamin Shimek; and 2 sister-in-laws, Patsy Shimek and Sue Shimek.
Funeral Mass Service: 10 am, Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hallettsville. Visitation: 4 pm, Wednesday, at Kubena Funeral Home with Rosary starting at7 pm. Pallbearers: Robert Condon, Lee Williams, Jodie Hoelscher, Greg Christ, Jerome A. Haas, Wilburt Etzler, Douglas Klesel and Alton Christ. Honorary pallbearers: her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews. Officiant: Msgr. John Peters. Memorials: Czech Heritage Society, St. Mary's Catholic Church or Donor's Choice. Burial: Shiner Catholic Cemetery.
